tzikeh: (wtf)

icon keywords - wtf?

I just reorganized my icon keywords so that they were all in a standardized format. I got a million errors, telling me I could only use things like "slash" in only *one* icon keyword field.

Is this serious? I can't use "slash" to describe more than one icon?

Isn't that bizarre? I've never used their "keyword" system like they want us to.

I seriously don't get it. Is there something in the FAQ about this?

Well, I think it's because when you go up to select an icon, it shows you that list of words, right? and so you pick the word "slash," and if you *could* have the same keyword associated with a lot of different icons, it wouldn't know what icon you mean.

I mean, that's not really what you want, is it? To go to "Picture to use:" and just see a list that says:

slash
slash
slash
slash
slash

...? You wouldn't know which icon went with which "slash."

I think the idea is to have a keyword for "having a bad day", so that even when you upload new icons later, if you have another "bad day" one, your old posts about bad days will update with appropriate icons. If you label them like I do ("B&W Faith Bad Day by icon_maker", "Angel Bad Day by other_maker"), old posts just end up featuring your default icon because they don't know they're about the same thing.

Hopefully that made a little sense. It's still a stupid system.

The idea is that you pick out which icon to use on a post or comment with your keywords. So if they all say "slash" and you picked "slash" for your post... it would be confused as to which to use.

 that part I get, but - none of them is just listed as "slash"; they all have things like "West Wing, slash, Jed and Leo, aggravation". Do you see what I mean? What if I want to see all six "West Wing" icons and their other keywords so I can choose which WW icon I want?

[identity profile] nestra.livejournal.com 2007-01-03 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's the commas that are getting you, because it's treating them as separate keywords.

[livejournal.com profile] latifah just said the same thing - I'm gonna give it all a try without commas.

Each comma-separated keyword is separate. That list of keywords would pop your icon up on your keyword list 4 times, under each keyword, and each keyword could not be used by any other icon. If you wanted to sort by fandom, you could do keywords like, West Wing: Jed and Leo aggravate each other (I think... I forget what the character/word limit is on keywords). But if you labelled that way, then all the West Wing icons would be near each other on an alphabetical list.

[identity profile] penknife.livejournal.com 2007-01-03 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah, because each keyword shows up in the pulldown menu for you to choose when you're posting, and if you had multiple icons with the keyword "slash," how would it know which one you meant if you just chose "slash" from the menu?

[identity profile] tzikeh.livejournal.com 2007-01-03 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I get that, but none of them is just listed as "slash"; they all have things like "West Wing, slash, Jed and Leo, aggravation". Do you see what I mean?

[identity profile] penknife.livejournal.com 2007-01-03 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but each keyword you enter separated by commas sorts in the menu separately, so that icon'll show up if you select "West Wing" or "slash" or "Jed and Leo" or "aggravation." You could try separating them with dashes or something so you'll end up with effectively one long keyword?

[identity profile] tzikeh.livejournal.com 2007-01-03 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
 I shall try the dash system. The FAQ says to use commas, which fucks it up.

I love lj, but man. Sometimes? HULK SMASH.

*blinks* I can use comma separation to give an icon multiple keyword-labels?

Huh.
