Digital camera DEAD. Suggestions?

I've had my digital camera a long, long time. It is (*was*) a Canon PowerShot S230 digital ELPH. It took photos and video. It came out in 2002. It is now an ex-camera.

(I crack myself up.)

I don't need anything fancy; I'm the worst photographer ever. From what I understand, new models have a swivel screen so you can see what you're shooting without having to torque your body around.

This one had a 3 Megapixel CCD imager for up to 2048x1536 pixel images; a 2x optical 35-70mm f/2.8-4.0 zoom, and a 1.5" color LCD with up to 10x playback zoom.

I have no idea what any of that means.

Any suggestions for a decent digital camera w/video option for someone who just wants photos that are of a better quality than those taken with her phone? I don't want anything too expensive, since I don't have plans to become the next Ansel Adams.

This one doesn't swivel, so I don't know whether it would appeal to you or not, but the Canon PowerShot SD1101IS is 8 Megapixels (which translates into higher resolution) and can be had, according to Google, for $135 and up - a far cry from the $400 that the S230 ran seven years ago.

ETA: The Mac logo is greyed out on the product page. I don't know whether that means it's incompatible with Mac or not. Phooey.

Take a look at the digital camera recs at cnet.com-- they recommend several that are pretty affordable. My only advice: get at least 6 megapixels, and get as much zoom as you can afford.

Random question - what caused the old camera to cease to be? Because if its screen was suddenly all blurry and vertical streaks, or just went black and wouldn't show anything, you could be covered under their CCD recall (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&keycode=2112&fcategoryid=221&modelid=9828) - my Elph 200 died in that way earlier this year. In my case, the camera was old enough that they didn't have the parts to fix it, so they sent me a shiny new one... for free.

Awesome - glad to have helped - good luck! Let me know what happens- I'm not sure if getting a new camera was a fluke, or a common solution to the issue.

I'm a big fan of Panasonic Lumix cameras. They have really good glass (Leica), and their user interface is very intuitive and easy to use.

I have a DMC-TZ5: 9.1MP, 10x wide angle optical (image stabilized) zoom, and can record 1280 x 720 HD resolution video at 30 fps. Alas, no swivel screen, but a fantastic camera.
