Argh, suck!

I am so, so grateful that there will be three more episodes of Sherlock, but this is nothing but suck for Martin Freeman:

Freeman had to turn down role of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit due to scheduling conflicts with the second season of Sherlock.

FEH.

*siiiigh*

Mind you, with Hobbit still in development and all sorts of wranglings going on, it is just possible that he might be in the running for it later. *hopes*

Okay, I was annoyed over David Tennant having to back out of Burke and Hare because NBC were being control-freak douchebags over his in-theory-only commitment to Rex (same thing went for when they wouldn't let Sendhil Ramamurthy shoot the Rex pilot because of an imaginary commitment to a season of Heroes they knew wasn't gonna exist), but this?

BBC, really? Or is it not really about Sherlock but instead that they'd have to push out Who since Moffat can't run both shows at the same time?

*is unimpressed*

Well, maybe if they keep dicking around on the Hobbit schedule long enough, Martin will still get to do it.

Really, the odds of The Hobbit getting off the ground in anywhere the near future are slim, at best. So, I think there's still hope in the future. He really would make an excellent Bilbo.

Yes, I thought it might be a difficult choice turning down Peter Jackson for a television part, but the story is different if you underline a SURE JOB in TV vs. a possible part in a project in early development.

[identity profile] irisbleufic.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm actually glad he turned it down. I want him as Watson more than I want him as Bilbo.

[identity profile] tzikeh.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, he didn't turn it down so much as "was contractually obligated to film Sherlock," which is the part that sucks, because it wasn't his choice to make.

[identity profile] irisbleufic.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, gotcha.

I'm afraid I'm still glad.

[identity profile] darthhellokitty.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, fuck. I want him in both.

The article does hold out some hope:

But with The Hobbit’s starting date still up in the air, it seems there may still be room for manoeuvre. "I’d like to think so. If there is any outside possibility, then that would be great. But I’ve learned not to think too much or hope too much about stuff. It will happen if it happens."

He would make a great Bilbo, but I'm honestly just excited to get more Sherlock.

[identity profile] brak666.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That does suck for him, but I honestly don't know whether to be happy or sad about it.

He would have a geek hat trick usually reserved for the likes of Ian McKellen or Patrick Stewart...

Patrick: Picard, Gurney, Professor X.

Ian: Gandalf, Magneto, etc.

Martin: Arthur Dent, John Watson, Bilbo Baggins...

I hope he makes it into the running later on.

holy crap - you're totally right. TRIPLE GEEK SCORE!

[identity profile] tzikeh.livejournal.com 2010-10-16 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
For Ian McKellen's third role for his hat trick: Number Two in The Prisoner.
