I was in Nashville at Slayage this weekend - an academic conference on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I spent the weekend eating deli food with [livejournal.com profile] sisabet, [livejournal.com profile] sockkpuppett, and [livejournal.com profile] whatssnoo, spending far too much money at the comic book store, watching Dead Gay Swans, and praising Jesus. I am completely brain-dead, not just from the con, but from spending two hours in traffic going three miles (not a lie) because of a semi full of tomatoes that wrecked on the highway, barrelled through the guard rail, and fell into a ravine.

I hope that when I am not brain-dead I may be able to write up a report on the conference. I can tell you two things I've learned, though, right off the top of my head:

1) I can *so totally* get a PhD, if the PhDs at this conference are anything to judge PhD-itude by. (I knew more about Hamlet than the guy presenting a paper on the parallels between Buffy and Hamlet. I also knew more about Buffy.)

2) Fandom is just like academia. Or vice versa.

And as [livejournal.com profile] sisabet says in her con wrap-up: David Hasselhoff.

Oh, was that this weekend? How was it? Did you go to the presentation on twinning in Buffy? Professor Bastian is my favorite ever. :)

Yes, you so can get a PhD. I now work with PhDs every day (not to mention for one, who is a fellow fan), and a group of people with less common sense, and even good-old-know-how, I have yet to meet. (Outside of television executives.)

Of *course* you can get a PhD. I didn't know this was even in question.

In fairness, however, I should point out that the Slayage attendees are not a representative sampling of the profession, for a variety of reasons that we should discuss in some less public forum. Heh.

Happy Birthday :)

Fandom is just like academia. Or vice versa.

LOL! I have been saying this myself for years. Of course, whichever side I say it to, they're offended.

RE: getting a Ph.D.

Next to having a baby, it was one of the hardest, most gueling things I've ever done.

On the other hand, simply having a Ph.D. does not necessarily make one a smart person, as you've discovered.

We should talk. :)

[whaps you on head because you didn't mention that it was your birthday and I knew that already and I'm a dweeb, praise Jesus]

Yeah, the con was fun, but the deli was funner, and the dead gay swan was funnest. I'm about to post *something* about it in my LJ, but I don't know what yet. heh

I never knew it was even a *question* that you couldn't get a PhD--or something. We were Executive Fan Girls. The EFG's. And we did a damned good job of correcting everybody.

Oh, it was never in question that getting a Ph.D. is grueling. My concern was that I wasn't *smart* enough.

Um, I am. ;)

I just wanted you to know that the first thing that popped into my head when I read that was Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. That's all.

That reminds me... I'm an idiot.

*sigh*

I live less than an hour away from Nashville, but did I register to go?

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
