Stupid aspect ratios. Stupid y-axis issues. Stupid color differences. Stupid HBO. Meh. And here I was thinking "Gee, my vid song is only 1:14 - it'll be easy!" Man, Al is right: announcing your plans is a good way to hear God laugh.
So instead, I will distract myself with memes! I was tagged by both
vagabondage and
katrimae for the "last song I bought / last song I listened to / etc." music meme.
(Please right-click and save for the mp3s, thanks - I'll leave them up 'til Wednesday or so):
1. Total volume of music files on my computer: just under 50 GB, but I'm not done ripping my cd collection yet.
2. The Last CD I bought was: This is Me by Eddie from Ohio.
3. The Last Song I Listened To Before Writing This: My vid song. (I reiterate: stupid HBO.)
4. Five Songs I Listen To A Lot:
a) The Three Dreams of J. Robert Oppenheimer, by Suzanne McDermott: sometimes this song is just lovely and sad, but recently it's been simply horrifying. Depends on my mood and my awareness level w/r/t world events. And the lyrics are *so* smart. If you know the history of the project, you'll love them.
b) Nessun Dorma, by Puccini, sung by Pavarotti: because it's perfection. Greatest aria ever written, sung by one of the greatest tenors ever to live.
c) Belleville Rendezvous (French Version), by Ben Charest: Best. Morning. Song. Ever. Makes me happy and bouncy. I listen with my morning cup of coffee, and I'm smiling.
d) The Three Fine Daughters of Farmer Brown (live version), by Eddie from Ohio: The harmonies toward the end when they kill the music and just SING give me the best kind of chills.
e) Humline Song, by James Gordon: Freaking hilarious, especially for a folkie like me.
5. Five songs that I have been listening to a lot in the past couple of months:
a) The Song That Goes Like This, from Spamalot: God yes. Everything that's wrong with modern musical theater is kicked in the head by this song.
b) The Sound of Settling, by Death Cab for Cutie: Yeah.
c) Nemesis, by Shriekback: Dude, they use "parthenogenesis" in a song! PARTHENOFUCKINGGENESIS! Who cares if it makes no sense - one of the great songs of my high school years. *headbangs*
d) Cat-Eye Willie Comes to Claim his Lover, by Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer: what's so astounding about Dave's work is that his songs sound like they're updated versions of standard folk songs from years and years ago - English ballads run through the Woody-Guthrinator - yet they're all original pieces.
e) You Really Got a Hold On Me, sung by Cyndi Lauper: because she takes a pop Beatles tune and turns it into a savage, codependent torch song.
And I was tagged by
wickedwords to do the six OTPs meme, so:
Like
wickedwords, I wanted to add an OT3 in here (you'll know it when you see it). I probably would have a few different choices if you asked me tomorrow, but here are six currently in heavy rotation. (In no order at all.)
1) House/Wilson: Oh, lord, the fucked-up, snarky, sexy joy of this pairing. I'm a big talent whore - the more talented the actor, the more likely I am to fall for him. Snark is huge, witty dialog is huge, teh hott is also huge, and it's all here in one bitter, lousy, adulterous, charming, brilliant package. The Chinese food, the "breaking up" comment, The scene in House's office after he admits he's an addict! The scene in Wilson's office after he's fired! Put these two in a room and let 'em go.
2) John/Aeryn: My love of Farscape knows no bounds, and my love of this duo knows no bounds either. Farscape disproved that stupid Moonlighting fallacy (a whole other rant): getting the romantic couple into bed with one another in no way destroys the show *if you can keep the writing quality up*. These two fought, fell in lust, fucked, died (Aeryn), backed away, fell in love, died (John), backed away, came together again, and continued on as a spectacular pair that worked as one. They are meant for each other in the most *random* ways.
3) Remus/Sirius: I don't go for pairs that have death in them usually, so this one is an anomaly. I didn't really get into it in the books; I got it, but I didn't get *into* it. Once they put it on screen with Gary Oldman and David Thewlis though... see "talent whore" above. Also, the two of them have had hard lives, and the prospect of them finding comfort in each other, even for a brief time, just melts my heart.
4) Jed/Leo: Fuck you, writers of The West Wing, for what you did to this astounding pair (and three-way marriage Abby). Even the New York Times took you to task for That Episode, and no wonder. Doesn't matter; I will forever hold these two (three Abby) in my heart as the loving partners in one of the most astounding, deep, rich, *open* male friendships ever portrayed on television (plus, occasionally, Abby). As Abby (Abby) says, when the three of them toast one another in the Oval Office before the State of the Union Address: "To Union--*all* states of it."
5) Bobby/Darien: EEEEE!!! Bobby/Darien! If you've seen "Flowers for Hobbes", well - there it is, right there on your tv screen: true love between two men. We often see partners willing to die for each other; we don't often *see it happen right before our eyes*. Each of them knew they were giving up their life in order to save the other one. It was like "The Gifts of the Magi", slash version. As the show goes on it only gets deeper and truer. "Go Starsky! Go Starsky Starsky Starsky!" Which, coincidentally, leads me to:
6) Grace/Luke: In a way, I'm glad Joan of Arcadia was cancelled, because they never broke up, and now they're together for all time. Rebellious, sarcastic, activist Grace and nerdy, obedient, quietly mature Luke. A bizarre couple, to be sure, but one of the most interesting and nuanced I've seen in a long long while. They were most of the reason I watched Joan as long as I did.
