merryish, my condo-mate, has written about how critical discussion of fanfiction helps keep fandom alive; critical discussion of fanfiction *writers* is simply cruel and bad for fandom. Her particular essay jumps off of something going on in Stargate Atlantis, but I think it's completely applicable to any and all fandoms. Go. Read.
