Direct from the Red Cross website: Department of Homeland Security blocking Red Cross from entering New Orleans.

Why? Because according to Homeland Security's opinion of those in New Orleans suffering wretched torments most of us can't imagine in our nightmares, *they won't leave if food and water show up*.

And thank goodness for the DHS, no? Since September 11, they've supposedly been working on a Master Plan for how to respond to another large disaster in a major U.S. city - and now they've finally unveiled it for us! Here's how it goes:

Day 1: Nothing.
Day 2: The President will play a guitar at a birthday party for a crony.
Day 3: The Secretary of State will go shoe-shopping and take in a show.
Day 4: Desperate citizens looking for food and water will be shot.
Day 5: More nothing.
Day 6: Spin.

The National Guard isn't letting photographers take pictures of the bodies inside the Convention Center. From the article:
A National Guardsman refused entry. "It doesn't need to be seen, it's a make-shift morgue in there," he told a Reuters photographer. "We're not letting anyone in there anymore. If you want to take pictures of dead bodies, go to Iraq."
People who had been staying at the Hyatt interrupt evacuation of Superdome
At one point Friday, the evacuation was interrupted briefly when school buses pulled up so some 700 guests and employees from the Hyatt Hotel could move to the head of the evacuation line — much to the amazement of those who had been crammed in the Superdome since last Sunday.

"How does this work? They (are) clean, they are dry, they get out ahead of us?" exclaimed Howard Blue, 22, who tried to get in their line. The National Guard blocked him as other guardsmen helped the well-dressed guests with their luggage.
I've had it. FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKING FUCKS. If any Bush Apologists still think this Administration has anything to offer us other than war and death and scorn for everyone but rich white straight Republican men and their brain-dead whores, you can go SET YOURSELF ON FUCKING FIRE. And take the whole fucking lot of them with you. RAZE THESE FUCKERS AND START OVER. If I listed everything that has been completely bungled, lied about, embarrassing, SHAMEFUL, and flat-out FUCKED UP this past week, your friendslist would consist entirely of my post. For about three pages. And *yes* it *IS* Bush&Co's fault. YES IT FUCKING WELL IS. Don't politicize? FUCK YOU.

Haven't we overthrown foreign governments on the justification, "They murdered their own citizens, they are teh evol, OMG they must be replaced by our puppets a democratically elected government that will do what we say"?

Umm, how is this not murdering our own citizens, again?

Why is there no impeachment?

Murphy's Law has struck with a vengeance. Tragically, it's the innocents who suffer and die.

Heads damn well better roll for this, including that of the guy who sits behind the desk that *should* display the notice: THE BUCK STOPS HERE.

I would note that it's the Louisiana Dept. of Homeland Security not letting the Red Cross in. The criticism is still valid, but this is a fuckup at the state level.

You are right that it's the Louisiana office, but who do you think they take their orders from?

Yes, and yes, and yes again. I've tried a hundred times to write about Katrina during the week, and each time I've felt overwhelmed (...all I've been able to do is donate money and talk to my students about the situation).

At least now I have something to link to that sums up what I feel about these fucking liars in Washington.

Write both your state's Senators and ask that they read this the next time they take the floor:

Mr President, in the face of the fact that you remained on vacation for three days while a human catastrophe of almost indescribable magnitude unfolded in New Orleans, an act that could be called derection of duty when compared to the responses of past presidents when faced with a similar crisis

In the face of the fact that you delayed declaring the area a Federal disaster zone because of his vacation

In the face of the fact that the funding needed by the US Army Corps of Engineers to keep the levees in proper repair has been diverted to the war in Iraq

In the face of the fact that your appointees, the heads of Homeland Security and FEMA have acted with gross incompetence in the face of this catastrophe

In the face of the fact that for over five days tens of thousands of people suffered for want of food, water, shelter when swift and decisive Federal action at the very highest level was required

In the face of these facts, Mr President, I ask you to resign.

Truthfully? I don't think they take orders from the federal government. The federal DHS was established in, what, 2002? The state DHS's have been in existence for decades. And per principles of federalism, states don't take kindly to the federal government coming in and telling them what to do. This is why the National Guard has to be requested by the governor of a state first, before they can enter.

I understand feelings are running high -- I'm not trying to bust on you here. I posted a rather profane entry about the Red Cross thing last night, myself. And there are a LOT of things to blame Bush and the feds and the US DHS for, but... *shrug* It's never a bad thing to try and be precise.

A-fucking-men.

This is just ... I don't have adequate words for this, and I honestly thought that (in my capacity as cynical Britisher) I was past being shocked by the Bush administration.

From what I can see, most of these screw-ups could have been fixed in 5 minutes by an order from the top. This is being allowed to happen.

As someone pointed out - Osama bin Laden, if he's alive, must be in his cave right now, laughing his fucking head off.

Word.

I haven't been able to write about this myself (talk, yes; write, no)--but even if I were, I couldn't improve on what you said. Sometimes there's nothing left to say but FUCK YOU.

The only problem with impeaching Bush, as people have suggested, is that we'd end up with Cheney. And if he left office for some reason, we'd have Dennis "Raze New Orleans" Hastert.

K.

LOL. I love you. :) I don't know about you, but I have sorely missed Jon Stewart's voice during all of this, and can not WAIT to hear what he and crew have to say when they get back from vacation. *misses my voice of snarky reason* because I need someone to be going WTF on television w/ the same strength I've been howling.

And sadly, in this day and age, any Senator who does read it will find themselves being labled a terrorist or unpatriotic, or some other stuff like that.

I have one question:

If the Governor of Louisiana has to make the request for aid and support (which should come from the national level in cases of Natural Disaster) where the hell was he? What was he doing for FIVE WHOLE DAYS?

I suspect he was out playing golf with Tiger Woods.

Y'know, I haven't been following it much in the papers, because my workplace has been keeping us up to date on at least the evacuation stuff. I work for Cingular, see, and I don't know if it's public knowledge, but our main base of operations is in Lafayette, plus we've call centers down there, so I haven't needed to watch the news. I get enough of that in my work email.

This, though...this is....I had no idea it was happening, and after having read through all of that (including all the links)...

Is it possible to impeach an entire administration, or do you have to start with one and risk it with the next one in line?
