If CNN is to be believed, France has gone on a bit of a tear:

I'm especially fond of the part where Toulouse moved to Germany and Strasbourg is now somewhere in the Czech Republic....

Haha. Your subject line is so funny.

And Lyon is in the Pyrenees. That'll make all the Grenoble kids who like to go into Lyon to party really sad. So rude of them to just pick up and move like that!

I don't think that *any* city on the map is in the right place. That's just ... wow, batting a thousand, CNN.

It was all a ruse. The French saud they were rioting but in reality they were just moving into the countries next door. It's a stealth takeover. Sometime this weekend, everyone in Germany is going to wake up with a craving for baguettes and cheese, and they're not going to know why.

Oh, how depressing. OTOH, I doubt I could put more than about six US cities in the right place. OTO,OH, I'm not an international news network.

Heh, perhaps it's time to brush up on my French, after all with that eastward expansion rate I'll be in the middle of France's new empire in no time. I mean, I'm already way West of the place where they put the word "France" on that map...

From: [identity profile] tzikeh.livejournal.com
Well, and that's the point, isn't it. I mean, I wouldn't be able to locate cities in Germany; I just happen to know France pretty well. But I'm not a news source.

*stares* well... Lille. mostly.

I think my favorite part is that Cannes appears to be migrating into Spain.

No, you're right. Not a single city there is where it used to be. Not even Paris.

How awesome that CNN scooped all the other news stations on this mass city moving story. This is precisely the kind of journalism I've come to expect from them.

Apparently CNN also thinks France is part of America these days, according to a post I just saw on [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes

To quote:
What's the biggest problem with politically-correct terminology?

When you forget that "African-American" is not a synonym for "black".

From a report on the French riots:

"It's been 11 days since two African-American teenagers were killed, electrocuted during a police chase, which prompted all of this."--CNN anchorman Carol Lin, Nov. 6

yeah, that's been a thing in HP-land, man. no black character in HP (dean thomas, lee jordan, angelina johnson, blaise zabini) is african-american, and the amount of hair i've torn out trying to explain that to people ... le sigh.

Well, to be fair, it looks to me like they put the wrong map under the text, which means some hapless engineer is in all kinds of trouble.

But still, I've been to Strasbourg, and it was in no way that far east of Italy. How very distressing. ;)

That... is hilarious. In a sad, sad way. Sharpe would be appalled at the bad French geography!

If anyone is interested just for comparison, here's a map of France from my favorite geography site:
http://worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/europe/lgcolor/frcolor.htm

Look in particular at the placement of Toulouse relative to Lyon and Cannes. Even if the (major) error was placing the wrong map underneath, that's still way wrong. It also looks like they have Lille where Calais should be...

From: [identity profile] fayths-abandyn.livejournal.com
Wow, migrating cities. Wow, Cannes is almost where Toulouse should be. That's...just...wow. Somebody did their homework at the last minute without looking at another map to make sure it was accurate. It's like they just threw darts at the map and labelled them almost at random, but keeping Paris near where it should be...just a little........off.

Except... not so much. Lille is northeast of Paris, Cannes is near the southeast border, Rennes is nowhere near straight north of Lyon, and Toulouse is in the southwest.

LOL! What a fantastic way to start the day.

Kinda reminds me of that scene from Sports Night:

(Dan has spotted an error in the script right before they go live.)
Dan: Helsinki's in Finland.
Dana: Really?
Dan: Yeah, don't worry, I got it.
Dana: Are you sure?
Dan: Am I sure that Helsinki's in Finland? Yeah, I'm quite sure.
Natalie: Which is it? Sweden or Switzerland?
Casey: It's in FINLAND!
Natalie: Elliott, get something up on the Net.
Elliott: What do you need?
Natalie: We think Helsinki might be in Finland.
Dan: Yeah, we think there's a pretty good chance.

The way I see it

For the record, this isn't the first time CNN has gotten it wrong. It turns out Switzerland overtook the Czech Republic for a day in March 2002. (http://internet.ls-la.net/pictures/CNN-map-of-Europe.html) (Swiss phonies -- I always knew they were faking that "neutrality" thing.)

By the by... I complain. I, in fact, boycott the movies. For multiple reasons. Including the lack of accuracy and in the first movie they cut out Hermoine's fun puzzle-solving part and the point that wizards need to be smart as well as heroic or whatever else, which I think is one of the best parts of the book and- *breath* well. Look at that. I'm complaining. ^.^;;;

Hmm. It looks like they pulled the graphic from Google World- now what I'm wondering is, did Google mess it up, or did whoever obtained the graphic mess up? Or both? I actually looked up Paris, France on Google World a month or two ago and it looked to be in the right place...eh. Either way it's kinda sad.

*lol* i love this icon, it always inspires rants. :D i watch the movies, but i complain as well ;) there are just so many little things that could be easily avoided and/or explained but just one sentence, so "cut for length" stuff is kinda not convincing there. *sigh*
