The Bulwer-Lytton Contest is held every year by the English Department at San Jose State University. The goal is simple - write the opening sentence to the world's worst novel. The contest now has a spin-off, called Lyttle Lytton, which restricts the entry to a maximum of thirty words (probably due to the fact that many entries in the Bulwer-Lytton contest were sentences that could have made Joyce ask for a bathroom break). Those thirty words can be in the form of more than one sentence, as well, which also helps a bit.
