It looks like the writers' strike is on.

The bad: No new tv after they run out the clock (sometime in mid-December, I think), and no new Daily Show or Colbert Report as of Monday.

The good: Less distraction from researching and writing my Yuletide story! More time to catch up with the shows I've fallen behind on!

Oh, and, er, I could do some homework, of course. *cough*

ETA: If anyone wants an interesting blow-by-blow account of why the strike is happening from a professional screenwriter, this comment over at Metafilter gives a clear explanation.

Yah. But, you and I, old friend, we have lived through many a writer strike, and come through unscathed. I feel we will do so again. SOLIDARITY!

*pats you* - think of it as... a recharging time for Jon and his crew. Think about how they'll be even funnier when they get back!

Or, well, have a lot of rum and pull out your Homicide dvds.

NYT Bestselling Author James Owen also has some very pointed things to say about he's been treated as a writer in Hollywood (http://coppervale.livejournal.com/110986.html).

Yeah, man, solidarity!

It's probably a good thing, then, that I've recently become fascinated with Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. Hoo-yah!

Yeah, I've been appalled by some of the stuff I've read lately, similar to this guy's account. So, the strike sucks, because it means they won't be paid for however long it lasts, but anytime producers and studios cry poor, as they've been doing, I call bullshit. Sorry, but if they're making money from stuff like online distribution, then everyone else who was involved should be, too. Don't even get me started on how writers for "unscripted" (ha, yeah, that's a good one!) shows had their jobs changed to editors, so they could be paid less. Bah.

Maybe it's my fundamental optimism talking, but the way I see it, writers' strike = no writers = no new episodes = time for me to write my epic fic before I get jossed! *clings to silver lining*

that I guess I'll use to make phone calls and write letters, because my Senator just sold out the US Constitution for reasons that make no sense at all.
