So, ol' RDJ, as we know, is on board for the "love" story between Holmes & Watson, as far as that goes (check various interviews / promos / posts in my lj for All That).

Here, he takes a swing at the film's nay-sayers:
Downey says the adaptation is extremely true to the source material. "My take is what the puritans would expect ... if the puritans know what they're talking about. He never wore a deerstalker cap, except like maybe once, for a second, except even then it was described differently. The long pipe was something that Gillette used so he didn't obscure his face on the stage. So we're not using any of those and we're staying true to the Doyle material."
OH SNAP.

(If you have issues with his comments, don't piss in my lj. He's not here. If he were, I wouldn't be spending my day browsing SDCC photos and shit.)

Party-pooper. It's such a lovely place to throw fits, too.

Sorry, man. Usually I'm totally up for it but I'm having a kind of a week. Plus the dude's at Comic Con; people can go find him there. :D

They'd have to get through the swarming fangirls, though. Fangirls scare me.

As if I would not turn into one, if given the opportunity....

:D I'm enjoying the "fangirl screams heard 'round the world" at the moment over the video of Tennant kissing Barrowman at SDCC.

Man. That place has to be surreal.

*nods*

It did look from what I'd seen like they might actually going back to the original source rather than continuing to build on years (and years) of fanon and I find that very exciting! Glad to have it confirmed by RDJ.

I realize you're going to give me the o.O eyes for this, but should I read some of the original source material before seeing this? I've never been much of a fan (I think I might've read Hound when I was in high school) but RDJ is definitely enough to make me break the habit, as it were.

Anyway, since I'm going to have some free time before the movie comes out, you can point me at some must read - must watch stuff. :->

I have no idea if the movie will *require* reading any SH stories, but it will probably contain a wink and a nod here and there. I can compile a list of what I think are the best short stories/novellas, but no this moment. :D You certainly won't need to read the whole canon.

Frankly? The Wikipedia entry on Holmes might be more than you ever needed to know. It also might send you off in search of the ones you find interesting.

A big plus is that it's all available online, since it's public domain. I have the entire canon on my iPod Touch.

Soooo excited. RDJ, JL, and GR are all onboard with the original canon - Holmes *was* the first Western martial artist, he was a bare-knuckle brawler, etc. Good times!

This is probably the slashiest passage in all of the Holmesian canon. It's from The Three Garridebs:
In an instant [the villain] had whisked out a revolver from his breast and had fired two shots. I felt a sudden hot sear as if a red-hot iron had been pressed to my thigh. There was a crash as Holmes's pistol came down on the man's head. I had a vision of him sprawling upon the floor with blood running down his face while Holmes rummaged him for weapons. Then my friend's wiry arms were round me, and he was leading me to a chair.

"You're not hurt, Watson? For God's sake, say that you are not hurt!"

It was worth a wound -- it was worth many wounds -- to know the depth of loyalty and love which lay behind that cold mask. The clear, hard eyes were dimmed for a moment, and the firm lips were shaking. For the one and only time I caught a glimpse of a great heart as well as of a great brain. All my years of humble but single-minded service culminated in that moment of revelation.

"It's nothing, Holmes. It's a mere scratch."

He had ripped up my trousers with his pocket-knife.

"You are right," he cried with an immense sigh of relief. "It is quite superficial." His face set like flint as he glared at our prisoner, who was sitting up with a dazed face. "By the Lord, it is as well for you. If you had killed Watson, you would not have got out of this room alive."
Mmmmm. Tasty, tasty clameurism!

I saw the trailer for this when we went to see Harry Potter, and to my surprise, the mostly-teen and twenty-ish audience was cheering and sounded absolutely thrilled by the trailer.

I know I was, though my twenties are far behind me. ;D
