What the heck font are they using for the... stuff... in Sherlock?

I've put screencaps in a photo album, since I think the pictures together would count as enough of a spoiler for those who still haven't seen it (and want to) to stay away.

Much appreciated!

Um. I think the font used for the text messages is different from the ones of Sherlock thinking. Possibly the text messages are in Tahoma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tahoma_(typeface))?

The latter is, I think, Johnston (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnston_(typeface)), since that is also what they use in the titles. (Someone figured it out from the style of the R.)

ITC Johnston, which is duplicated almost exactly by P22's Underground. (P22 used to call it London Underground and now seem to call their variants of it either Johnston Underground or just Underground - I'm guessing London Transport had words with them.)

Ooh!

Now I just have to find out how to get my hands on ITC Johnston without paying $90 for it.

Bleh.

Thank you!

I love that someone figured it out from the r. I'm pretty good at recognizing any font I have, and I have a lot of fonts. But I do not have ITC Johnston.

Thank you!

The text messages look like they might be Trade Gothic or Frutiger, or *maybe* Myriad.

P22's version is much cheaper. See them at myfonts.com

Heh. Those capital Rs are very familiar, actually, if you spend any time in London.

There's a free version here.

There's a picspam of 1x01 (http://mars-mellow.livejournal.com/77486.html) that gives you some other caps of text messages. The lowercase 'k' is fairly distinctive.

I would encourage anyone who is interested to use either Identifont or WhatTheFont; those were my best guesses based on [livejournal.com profile] tzikeh's sample, and I do not have any intention of watching the show.

The lower-case i is wrong for it to be Johnston. Unless it's just the resolution of the screencaps, the i is dotted with a normal dot; in Johnston it's a diamond-shaped dot.

I think my fontbooks are packed away, but I'll go have a dig through the garage this afternoon and see if I can come up with something for you.

The London Underground Museum licensed the original Johnston font to P22; that font is sold as Johnston Underground. But P22 built on that to create different weights, different alphabetic characters, and other things missing from the original Johnston design, and that series is sold simply as Underground.

/Why yes, I am a font geek.

Underground Pro also varies in some details regarding the numbers, if I recall correctly, not just the different weights.

For the text messages, someone in the WhatTheFont forums proposed Titillium (XX) but the submission is still "Unsolved" (http://new.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/forum/case/303434/). Identifont is giving me Depot (http://www.identifont.com/list?1+id+0+II4+17+G3U+16+C4F+16+D7P+15+256E+9+256C+9+252W+5), Ronnia Light (http://www.identifont.com/identify?18+abcdefghiklmnopqrstuvwxyBCDEGIKLMNOPRSTUVWY+1UA+58D+2V+G39+5P+J+2E+6X5+2BT+2L+4C+DH+4B+Z+1A+6XA+9Z+8R2+M), and Facit (http://www.identifont.com/list?1+id+1+II4+17+G3U+16+C4F+16+D7P+15+256E+9+256C+9+252W+5), but none of them are exactly right (see the k's and y's). Still looking...

Someone else posted about this on the sherlockbbc comm. According to what I found googling, it looks like AF Generation Z Medium (http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/fw-acme/af-generation-z/medium/). At least, the k looks the same. Hope this helps!

Heh. My first thought was "Isn't that the London Tube font?" It was the lower-case L that did it for me.
