My awesome and spectacular Ecco boots have given up the ghost after 20 years, and Ecco no longer makes them. So I must venture forth and find a new pair of winter boots that have the three qualities my Ecco boots had:

1) Warm. Really, really fuckin' warm.

2) Waterproof.

3) As good a tread for ice as exists on boots. Ice is ice, and there's only so much a boot can do, but some are much better than most.

My Ecco boots laced up to about three inches above the ankle (kind of like this), and I'm looking for the same (if it's closer to the calf than the ankle, it's too high for me). If you've got a pair of boots that fit the bill (that cost less than $150), please comment! And a link to a site where I can purchase them would be great.

Note: the boots do not have to be anywhere near pretty. Don't care. Warm, waterproof, and as good on the ice as can be is all I require.

I just got these North Face boots at REI and I LOVE them

http://www.rei.com/product/788282

the great thing about them is that you lace them up once to the degree of snugness you want, and then you double know the lace and don't need to worry about it again (for the most part). You pull them on and off by opening the zip on the inside of the calf down to your instep. I have a very high instep and didn't think I could wear a pair of boots like this because I have a hard time getting my feet in them... but I've had *no* trouble with them.

I've got a pair of Uggs, which surprisingly look NOTHING like Uggs. Got 'em for $70 on clearance at one of those wholesale shoe places. When they go, I plan on getting some Keens.

They have a lot of boots, and most of them have freakin fantastic treads: http://www.zappos.com/keen-womens-boots~1

A suggestion: You have more flexibility on the traction-on-ice front if you get a pair of YakTrax or similar; then the boots themselves only need to meet two of your criteria.

I don't trust those--the only two people I've ever known to use YakTrax (one in Chicago, one in Boston) both fell hard and broke their arms.

I know, right? I mean, I'm sure they must work, I guess, since people keep buying them (though okay, that's not always an indication of success), but.

I like my Coleman's hiking boots, which hit just right around my ankle. I'll see if I can find something more specific about the style name or something when I can get home and see if I can find that inside the boot.

I found them at Big 5 for cheap. Like, under $40.

Reviews I've seen, and the friend who has worn them once or twice, are positive, but anything can fail. And that's some pretty scary anecdata.

yak trax aren't great because they have those spring like things wrapped around the rubber and they work great on snow but don't do anything on ice (and are deadly on hard indoor floors... I've nearly landed on my ass just coming in the library and walking on the terrazzo flooring). I just bought a pair of these http://www.rei.com/product/760710 at the same time as i got the boots because they have little spiky things that should work on ice. i have not yet had to use them though, so i can't verify that they work.

eta: i also just noticed that this kind have a replacement kit thing so you can put different types of spiky-things in them other than what comes installed. that could be really good.

The only boots that ever kept my always-cold feet warm were Sorels; I'm talking hours outside in subzero, windy weather, and the rest of me got cold but my feet never did. You might check Zappos and Sierra Trading Post, or Google around and see if they're on sale.

Yeah, I can't suggest YakTrax either. They're not worth it. I have a pair sitting in my closet because ... they suck.

Hmmm -- I have to go downtown at some point next week; I'll stop in at the North Face store at the Hancock building at give them a look!

I'll have to do a little research on those. I did see some Uggs that look nothing like Uggs up at Alamo shoes....

Are they seriously warm, though--like, sub-zero temps still warm? I think that would be hard to tell in Seattle.

Do you know which Sorels in particular?

It is, and I didn't ever have any when I was back in the Midwest. They are pretty warm, and they have kept my feet dry in bad weather, though.

DAMN!!! I have a pair of those things, because I've fallen on ice a few times - since I got them a few years ago, I haven't actually had to USE them more than once or twice, but I had confidence in them...

The ones I had were taller than you want (knee height), but they looked kind of like these, only with laces, instead. I like these as well. But check around, because Zappos doesn't have the greatest prices.

I bought a spiffy new pair of Sorels this year and second the rec!

I've worn them in 0 degree temps, in slush, in snow, and on ice and they've performed admirably. Very warm, easy on and off, and comfy like a sneaker. Reviews say to order up a size, but since I never wear anything heavier than a hand-knit sock on my feet, I got my regular size and they're fine.

Also? They're cute!

I like my Uggs Adirondack II boots (which are in the "look nothing like Uggs" category. Zappos has them here: http://tinyurl.com/6f3tzm3
though I got them for less than this at the Uggs store in Chicago (909 N. Rush).

I've found them to be very warm, even more so if you add a second fleece innersole to them as I did, completely waterproof, and good in ice and snow.

Can you get Hanwag boots in the US? A fast google has only gotten me German and UK links so far.

But if you can get them, I have these (http://www.lansdaleltd.com/prod.php/prod/HANLIMAL) and I love them. They are a bit pricy, but they are warm, waterproof, they fit awesomely and they last for years. You could even get them re-soled (at least in Germany) if the soles should go.

the other thing i like about these is that the soles are thin enough that i feel like I can feel the ground below so I'll know sooner if it's icy. that may be complete bollox... but with my Sorel's which I've had since my first winter here - 13 years! - and, while they're ugly they're still in really good shape but because I can't feel the ground through them I shuffle along and feel like I look 90. With the North Face ones I really do feel the uneven ground through them. also, i have really fat calves, and because they lace up (and have a tongue like an ordinary boot would, it's just in the back) I can lace them widely enough to fit my fat calves but still feel snug and keep the cold out.

I bought a pair of Kamik snow boots a few years ago after we had our epic snowstorm, and I do not regret it one bit. I don't see the same style at Zappos anymore (it had a front zipper, which meant I could get them on and off soooo easily), but there are some other styles here (and sometimes Zappos' clearance site will have other styles for even cheaper)
http://www.zappos.com/search/brand/588/filter/categoryFacet/%22Boots%22/gender/%22Womens%22/hide%3AproductTypeFacet/%22Shoes%22/subCategoryFacet/%22Ankle%22/sort/isNew/desc/productPopularity/asc/

The Montreal style looks like it might fit your bill -- I've found Sorels fit me worse than most people, while Ecco was always a great line for me, so we might have similiar problems. My Kamiks are sooooo warm and toasty and have great tread (though nothing works on ice, and I still had to walk very carefully on the sheer ice we get here). I used to mountain climb, so believe me, I need warm boots in snow or ice, since I had early stages of frostbite once.

hm - but if the soles are thin enough that you can feel the ground, how can they possibly keep you warm?

Ooh - I saw those at Alamo Shoes the other week! But yeah, they were $200 there as well.

The Ugg store, you say.

I will have to go look.

My Sorels worked on ice. L and I were out videotaping at a local park in subzero weather, and I literally couldn't slide on the frozen lake. Could NOT slide. Those boots were amazing.

so far i have not had a problem. i may have a different story to tell tomorrow after waiting for the bus with the anticipated -f*kingh*ll windchill we're supposed to have. but they are lined with some sort of fiber that's meant to help keep out cold.

I second my recommendation for Bogs boots. Good to -40!

Hmm. I have to go up metal outside stairs to my apartment, and I trust YakTrax to get me up and down them when there's ice. I haven't had any problems, and I find them fine for walking on icy parking lots, etc. So, hmm. Mileage varies, clearly.

I have a pair of Sorels that enabled me to hike a mile in 3-foot snow during a blizzard -- and while every other part of me was all BRRR and soaked, my feet were warm and dry. I cannot recommend that brand enough.
