The awards were dull, dull, dull. Except for Jon Stewart's bit with the news awards and The Daily Show finally getting its due, and The Amazing Race upsetting American Idol and Survivor (HAH! as it *SHOULD*), there really wasn't much going on this year. Nobody wore anything fabulous or awful, nobody said anything particularly noteworthy.

And, seriously - and this is coming from the biggest West Wing fan in the world - they didn't deserve to win this year. And they knew it - look at the shock on their faces. Wow. Yes, fourth season was much better and more even in quality than last season, which *also* won, but then The Sopranos wasn't in contention last season. And actually, Six Feet Under should have won last year, anyway.

Seriously - I think season 4 of The West Wing is tied with season 2 for greatness (nothing touches season 1). I think it was that good. I think they made an amazing recovery from early season 3 and it's a shame that season 3 lost viewers, because they missed out on some terrific stuff this season (and some terrific stuff in season 3, too, like Bartlet for America, but I understand why people didn't tune in after the first few). But I don't think this season was better than either of the HBO shows which were up for the award.

Ah, well. The Emmys are never really about what was truly the best. Except when they are (AMAZING RACE! DAILY SHOW!).

mostly I agree with your assessment (particularly the fact that nothing can ever touch the first season of TWW)....except for this part:

Nobody wore anything fabulous or awful

John Spencer wore a white tux. A *very* white tux. Some might even say blindingly white. Now, whether you consider that FABulous or awful I do think it bears mention! ;-)

Uh, yeah I was trying to make a comment and hit post and instead of reply.

Anyway I heard on the radio that The Amazing Race won the Emmy and the dj who was relaying the news sounded so pissed off. "You know who won best reality show? The Amazing Race, they weren't even renewed." I find TAR way more interesting than Survivor and I forgot what other show was nominated.

I've been alternating between driving fourteen-hour days and crashing, so your entry is the first I've heard of the Emmys. And ... yes, colour me surprised. Very surprised, in fact.

Any idea what an explanation might be?

Several possibilities spring to mind:

1) The ATAS is simply *not* ready to award their highest honor to a show on HBO.

2) The ATAS wanted to give one last vote of confidence to Aaron Sorkin for his creation.

3) The ATAS wanted to thumb their noses at the NBC suits for being such schmucks about Sorkin's writing schedule - a vote in solidarity of art over commerce.

4) The ATAS was high.
