Two items for you all -

1) [livejournal.com profile] flummery has zines for sale for the cost of postage. Variety of fandoms. Check 'em out.

2) A Man from UNCLE story was plagiarized and posted as an "original story" in La Femme Nikita fandom.

Here is the plagiarist's post: http://www.voy.com/58826/1005.html

Here is the original story: http://file40.net/file40g/andmiles_g.html

Note the posting date of the original is March 2003, and the "original story" in LFN was posted in August.

The usual plea to go and reprimand the plagiarist comes next. We are a self-policing community; please go add your voices to the very few so far who have said "Plagiarism isn't worth it in fandom; you will *always* be found out and ridiculed."

Done and done. That's possibly the worst (best?) case of plagiarism I've ever seen. Like people don't have anything better to do with their time! I can only hope that the 'author' is some young fan girl somewhere because as much as the stereotypes squick me, it's true that kids do stupid things (I should know- although I was never stupid enough to do that) and hopefully in time she'll find her own talents. Of course, now I've said that she's gonna turn out to be some seventy year old nun in Maryland or something...

Yeah, I really hope she's a kid too - even though if she is a kid, I was a bit hard on her. Still - once bitten, twice shy.

Thanks for adding to the plagiarism beating. Whenever I get wind of it, I go and add my comments - regardless of fandom. Plagiarists know no fandom boundaries. ;)

I just added my comments. I'm pissed off on the author's behalf because the same thing happened to me once -- evil, thy name is Search and Replace.

How on earth do these things happen? Does this Deby person honestly believe she's the only person on the Net who reads both fandoms?

Oh, I don't know. It amused me. ::grins::

Wow, that was blatant! Does anyone have any clues to the real identity of the little weasel?

Not that I know. I'm *assuming* she's just some idiot kid, but it's also possible it's a 45-year-old woman. <sigh>. I'd like to be able to truthfully say "usually it's someone who is young and/or new to fandom", because you'd think anyone who has been in fandom even a little while understands that it can seem huge but is in fact quite small.

If she's young, probably so - when you know everything, it never occurs to you that actually you know nothing. ;) And when you're new to fandom, you have no concept of either how big or how small it really is.

If' she's older and has been around a while, then she's just freaking stupid.

*SNARL*

Thanks for the heads-up, dahling...

If you have contact info for the original author, could you request that once the dust settles on this incident that she post a summary to the boards at Access Denied, please? http://www.mizjain.org/deniedboard/

Yes the SF professional and fannish world is very small. Everybody knows everybody. Everybody has read everything (seemingly). Odds are, that even if a particular show or writer isn't your particular favorite, one of your friends can tell you everything there is to know about the original work and all of the associated fanfic.

It really doesn't matter how old the thief is. Stealing is stealing and is repugnant at any age. I'd be interested in how many fannish pseudonyms this idiot uses in order to see what other fic she may have stolen under other names.

as one from the LFN fandom...

Deby is a complete unknown. She's never posted nor commented on the LFN storyboards before. The Classics board is very small and not very active - I actually rarely go there, so it seems like an odd place to be posting in general.

Please give credit to our Jaron, who was the first to raise the question about the story and apparently recognized it. Nestra and Melymbrosia tracked down the story, I just passed the question to Nestra, since she's more multi-fandom than I am (I actually thought the original story might be XFiles).

We didn't actually figure it out from reading both fandoms -- Nestra was suspicious because some of the characters had the wrong hair/eyecolor, she asked me because she thought it might be XF, and I googled one of the more striking similes and found a Man From Uncle story.

Well, then, I guess we have our answer: young or old, Deby is simply a nitwit. *g*
