I am thankful:
The food, as usual, was supreme - my favorite meal of the year. Must. Remember. Pirano. Cheese.
The company was startlingly not annoying.
And continuing in the tradition of annual proof that I share a sense of humor with my father, but not my mother:
Dad: I like your new hair - that's a nice cut on you.
Me: Yeah, it's Chunky White Dyke Haircut #2, but hey, I'll take it.
Dad: I thought that was when it's cropped really close to the head - and grey!
Me: Nah, that's Chunky White Dyke Haircut #1!
Mom: (in all seriousness) Are you trying to tell us something?
Me: (pause) Yes, mom, I thought it was time you knew - I'm white.
(Me and Dad laugh like loons. Mom continues to looks concerned.)
Ah, well. Whaddayagonnado.
- That I have the wherewithal, the resources, and above all the freedom to succeed at pretty much anything I choose if I am willing to work hard and make small sacrifices.
- That my friends are in the same general boat, whether they know it or not.
- That people are finally finally getting angry enough about our current political situation that they're getting involved when they weren't ever before.
- That my family becomes less annoying as I become more myself.
- That some team of chemists invented Prozac.
- That I live in the time when The Lord of the Rings was adapted into beautiful, thrilling movies.
- That fandom exists.
- That spiced-pear chutney exists.
