Yesterday I returned to work after having taken Friday as a Mental Health day for myself. I was all refreshed and ready to go.
And then I got to my desk.
Apparently, over the weekend, someone did some work in the ceiling above my desk, running wires. There were little bits of ceiling tile debris ALL OVER my desk, in my zip disk, in my coffee cup, on my bookshelves, on my monitors... my coffee cup had been spilled into my keyboard, on my chair, and on the carpet they'd just had steam-cleaned the week before. There was pipe insulation hanging off my desk.
Nobody left so much as a note or a voice-mail saying "sorry".
I told the guys in buildings and maintenance, and my manager, that someone could call me once it had been cleaned up. Then I went home (stopped for Starbucks on the way), changed into my pjs, and watched tv. I made a few minor changes to the main site from my laptop while sitting on the living room couch. This is counting as a regular work day.
They cleaned it up spectacularly well. I have to get a replacement wrist rest (already got a replacement keyboard), but everything else is spotless. Seriously. Better shape than it was before this weekend.
Sometimes? It is good to be assertive.
