Someday the novel... will go into decline -- if it hasn't already -- and will become, like poetry, a genre treasured and created by just a relative few. This won't happen in our lifetime, but it's not too soon to wonder what the next new thing, the new literary form, might be.

It might be comic books. Seriously.

If you don't want to log in, you could also head over to your local newsstand and pick up the Sunday Times. You get news and a crossword puzzle too!

Hee. Well, the novel was considered a juvenile form that one should be embarassed to read back in the day, so there's certainly historical precedent.

You know, actually I gave up on this when it said I should just skip "Y: The Last Man," which is one of the smartest and most engaging narratives I've seen in a while (and the synopsis was pretty damned inaccurate, too.)

Ooops. Was that me getting ranty? :)

Thanks for the link, tho. It's nice to know the NYT is noticing the more literary comics. Many of them really are tremendously good.
