[livejournal.com profile] sherrold has just posted to her lj about which movies on the 100 Overlooked Movies of the 1990s list she has seen.

I wish I had a "reverse pimp!" icon.

Of the 100 on that list - the following are the ones I haven't seen. If you've seen one of these and feel I absolutely haven't lived until I have seen it, I'm willing to be persuaded.

Chungking Express
Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai
Devil in a Blue Dress
Breakdown
Fireworks
Exotica
Sonatine
Bullet in the Head
Ashes of Time
Dead Alive

I'm a big fan of Ghost Dog. It's a strangely moving film. I've seen it several times and every time it hits me hard, in that good way.

Haven't seen any of your list, although I've been meaning to see Exotica for some time. From all accounts, it's the anti-Showgirls, plus I would happily watch Mia Kirshner in just about anything.

I'm puzzled by the notion of Babe: Pig in the City as "overlooked." I seem to recall it being splashed all over everything in true sequel-to-sleeper-hit fashion...

"Dead Alive" is one of the most entertaining zombie movies of all-time. Especially the kool-aid blood, and the mother. "Ghost Dog" is pretty keen too (you can always borrow my copy) tho it helps if you're already an Asian action movie fan (apparently there's a scene which is a shot-for-shot hommage to one of Japan's big cult action movie director's of the 1960s films). But of this list, "Exotica" is the one that surprises me. I figured Snoo's Bruce Greenwood fetish would have meant you'd seen it for sure at least twice. "Bullet in the Head" is so-so, and it grealy depends on which cut of it you see (theere are several) and is more for Woo purists I think.

Agreed.

Dead Alive is darn gory, but so gory, its funny. Not so much creepy scary gory as wow, look at all that red wet stuff campy gory. Peter Jackson did it, which is funnier than hell..."Wait...you got the LotR gig after THIS???"

Breakdown has Kurt Russell in it, which is enough of a deterrant for me. I'm hard pressed to find a movie of his that I like.

Unless you count Overboard, damn, where was the Oscar nod there??

However, it does have the late J.T. Walsh in it...who is (was) a great actor.

BTW, saw the "holiday" Flash llama. Brilliant!

If you need a "reverse pimp" icon, then I need a "reverse rec" icon. Haven't seen most of them, but "Devil in a Blue Dress" was really, truly awful. Don't waste your time.

As others have said Dead Alive is amusing, and worth a look just to see where Peter Jackson started. The man is so twisted! *g*

I'm fond of "Bullet in the Head", however I'm not sure it's your thing. It's the incredibly violent story of three Vietnamese guys who get caught up in a very messy combination of HK gangs and the Vietnam war. My ex-bf, who likes other John Woo movies found this one a bit much. I do think it's an interesting story of dreams gone messily wrong. If you do decide to give it a try I'd love to know what you make of it.

Any fan of either zombie movies or B horror movies needs to see Dead Alive. Seriously. At the least there is a thing with a lawn mower...

Damn, I need a zombie icon.

I would definitely pimp Ghost Dog to you. It's a cozy little film, beautifully and weirdly shot. Great character casting. I've always liked Forest Whitaker, and he carries the film handily.

Sonatine? Kitano Takeshi?? If so, yes. You need to see it. It's also artfully shot, sort of funny, and incredibly violent. It's not your run-of-the-mill kungfu/JohnWoo--there's a lot of character development and humor, and it actually has a plot beyond sparkling and balletic explosions. The explosions are more Peckinpah than Woo. :)

Don't bother with the movie version of 'Devil in a Blue Dress', just go read the original Walter Mosley books, which are fantastic!

The book is of course better, but I liked the movie.
