Superman/Clark Kent = Brandon Routh
Lois Lane = Kate Bosworth
Lex Luthor = Kevin Spacey

I know nothing about Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth has yet to impress me, and Kevin Spacey... I used to love him desperately, but he keeps picking craptastic projects. HOWEVER, he's best when he's a complex baddie, and his Lex Luthor has the potential to be a thing of beauty.

But the best news, for me anyway, is today's casting tidbit:

Perry White = Hugh Laurie.

How much do I love that Hugh Laurie, whom I have adored *forever*, is finally breaking big in the U.S.? First House and now this. Yay!

Oooh, I hadn't heard about Hugh being cast! And as Perry? Hm, I can see that.

Man, I was not going to see this movie, but the supporting cast, plus it being Bryan Singer.... They're going to make me see it, aren't they?

Yeah, I'm having that "supporting cast... too good... cannot resist..." thing going on. Sigh.

They are cruel and evil people. Not that I wouldn't have seen it eventually, but I thought I might save myself some time and money by waiting and renting the DVD. Now that's looking less likely.

Still not as anxious, though, as I am for Batman Begins. Gimme.

Brandon Routh is an Iowa farmboy who's been on a few soaps, which was pretty much Christopher Reeve's resume too.

But between Hugh as Perry and JK Simmons in Spiderman, the cranky news editor front is doing well.

I was thinking the same thing - that it's J.K. Simmonsesque!

I was hoping (totally unfounded fanboy dreamcasting hope) that either Stephen Root or Bruce McGill would be cast as Perry. Both are excellent actors deserving of wider exposure (and higher paying work), they fit the traditional Perry White "type," and are in their early 50s.

That said, I think Hugh Laurie is an outstanding choice. I've only seen him in a few things ("Blackadder, Sense and Sensibility, Peter's Friends), but he's always caught my eye.

As for Spacey, I'm with you on the trepidation. In particular, I found his comments a few weeks ago about doing things like Superman in order to be able to do things like Beyond the Sea disturbing. But, as many have pointed out, Spacey + Singer worked extremely well with Usual Suspects, so I'm cautiously optimistic about his Lex.

I'm happy Singer stuck with the winning formula of casting an unknown as Superman. Routh comes with very few credits to his name, but so did Reeve, Cain, and Welling. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the streak to continue.

Bosworth I have not seen at all, so I can only reserve judgment on her.

Just eighteen months to wait until it's out! Thank Zod we've got Batman Begins to look forward to this summer!

Yeah, Laurie's definitely against the standard Perry White idea, but I think he could be fabulous. And yes again on the Usual Suspects thing.

And yay for Batman Begins!

I adore Hugh Laurie. Have for years (though probably fewer than you).

I kept seeing ads for House and saying, "That looks like Hugh Laurie," but then I'd hear him talk and think, "No, Hugh is English."

I had NO IDEA he could sound like that. Wow.

Damn. For Hugh Laurie I might actually have to watch this movie.

I'm guessing you didn't like Beyond the Sea? I usually hate musicals (there are exceptions) but I thought Kevin was awesome, and while I had no opinion about Bobby Darin prior to the film, I still think Kevin Spacey can do anything and do it well. I think the title song pastiche was really everything an homage to 1950s musicals should be.

Anyway, all this to say, Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor (will he shave his head?) will be pretty cool. Thanks for the info.

I haven't even seen Beyond the Sea, just because so many of the reviews I read haven't liked it. But if you really think it's worth the time, I could go check out a matinee. I have a problem with how Spacey couldn't see past his own desire to play Darin to the fact that by the time Bobby Darin was Kevin's age, he'd been dead for ten years. ;) He just looks wrong. I mean, the makeup is great and all, but I have weird problems with that kind of thing. Hm.

I love Kevin Spacey - I loved him in Wiseguy, I loved him in Usual Suspects, I loved him in L.A. Confidential, I *adored* him on Saturday Night Live (his portrayal of Christopher Walken auditioning for the role of Han Solo is a thing of beauty and a joy forever), and I loved his singing voice from the first time I heard it. But his recent run of films has been really disappointing.

Oh man, and I missed that?! Dang!

I wonder if A Bit of Fry & Laurie will ever come out on DVD?

Oh, man, I wish ABoF&L would come out on DVD, but since they never released more than the one tape over here--and it shows no sign of even appearing on DVD in the UK--I'm not holding my breath. *sigh* (That would be me not holding the breath. *g*)

What's on the tape? I didn't know anything was released!

And yes, it figures, but one of the things I lost in the Great HardDrive Crash of 2005 was 3 seasons of ABoF&L. :: kicks self ::

Here's the Amazon entry for it. My favorite bits are the pretentious talk show where they're talking about language, the older gentleman lamenting that he never got to suckle at the breast of a Burmese maiden, and the skit where Hugh is the guy with a sound effect for a name where Stephen ends up "hitting" him. *g*

Unfortunately, it never has seemed to air on BBC America when I actually have BBC America, so I've never really seen much beyond this tape. ARGH!

I don't know if I am the best person to recommend movies to other people. I rarely read movie reviews and when I do read them it's usually after I have seen the film and have my own opinion. I had heard from [livejournal.com profile] sherrold that some critics hated Beyond the Sea. My SO lives for musicals (you should see his happy dance of joy that Joan of Arcadia is having a musical ep next week) and so I see many of them regardless of how I feel about them. While this isn't technically a musical, there is dancing in the streets. :-) Maybe dl the soundtrack and see if you really love the arrangements and then see the movie. I thought it was worth the time, though I do see what you mean about his age, they skirt that issue in the film.

Heh. And I love musicals. :-) Perhaps I will take myself off to the movie theater...

Hugh Laurie as Perry White is a bizarre and wonderful idea. Darn. Now I may have to see this movie.
