Sunday channel surfing brings me to The Science Channel and a seven-episode marathon of "Science's 100 Greatest Discoveries". Which I am *all over* as a perfect way to spend a Sunday and the first day of my period -- on the couch, with a cream cheese and jelly sandwich, in my comfy slippers, watching the universe 'splode.

Observations thus far:

I understand the episode naming conceit, but I'm still giggling at the titles. "Science's 100 Greatest Discoveries: Physics." Physics! A very important discovery. Certainly somewhere in the top 100. Next up is "Science's 100 Greatest Discoveries: Astronomy." Nailed it again, Science Channel! I'd put Astronomy in the top 100 too!

And in the "understatement" department -- when Einstein's Theory of General Relativity was proven, one of the articles in the New York times was headlined thus (please imagine the following in that classic NYT font):

LIGHTS ALL ASKEW, IN THE HEAVENS
Men of Science More or Less Agog
Over Results of Eclipse Observations.

"More or Less Agog" is a good name for a band.

Also theoretical physicist and author Michio Kaku is my boyfriend. Just saying.

How can you be "more or less" agog? It seems to me that either you're agog, or you're not. No shilly-shallying. Is it like "sort of pregnant"?

Possibly they mean that some scientists are more agog and some scientists are less agog, thereby norming the agog scale?

Like the Kinsey scale, then? "I'm a 6 on the agog scale, OMG!!!" "I'm an agog 1. ::yawn::."

I contend that Science's 100 Greatest Discoveries would be way cooler if Bill Nye acted more like the Bill Nye of my youth. It would feature such episodes as "Science's 100 Greatest Discoveries: Stock Footage of Blowing Shit Up."

I wholeheartedly agree. All science is enhanced by stock footage of blowing shit up.

That would be a fun name for a racehorse, too. :)
