Back in the House episode "Role Model", House told an Inuit story about fishing. This was a direct quote from one of David Shore's episodes of Due South. I was wondering if anyone posted about this in their lj when it happened (aired on April 12), or if anyone can point me towards other fannish discussions of the first two seasons of Due South in lj or around the fannish internet. I'm curious about how the first two seasons of dS have held up on the 'net. I see plenty of third and fourth season discussion, so I don't need any links to that *g*.

Thanks you guys! (Especially those who may have pointed out the Inuit thing and can link me....)

[livejournal.com profile] pearl_o has been very Duser-y of late and no doubt can poitn you towards all the active DS fandom on LJ. I know a while back I gave someone a list of Haggis-era eps for a marathon, but I can't remember who that was now).

You might post this at [livejournal.com profile] ds_noticeboard &/or [livejournal.com profile] ds_discourse; I know I remember having seen things about the anecdote on House, but I wasn't into dS then and kind of skimmed over.

Well, I posted about it the same night, IIRC, but on a Season 1/2 only list, not LJ (I never post in my LJ).

There are Season 1/2 fans that have LJs & post some discussion, but I don't have those links at the ready, sorry about that. (I could probably hunt some up when I have a moment, if you want, though it probably wouldn't be until the weekend).

A lot of Seasons 1/2 discussion seems to take place via email or on lists, rather than on LJ, especially compared to Season 3 (or Seasons 3/4 if you prefer). Two Axes, a Season 1/2 only list (through Yahoo) has been active lately. Season 1/2 crops up periodically on LJ community, DS Discourse.
http://www.livejournal.com/community/ds_discourse

Unfortunately, though the Ray Wars have died down, there is still ample animosity on both sides. These days that largely takes the form of Season 1/2 fans ignoring Seasons 3/4, or treating Seasons 3/4 as a spinoff from Due South rather than a continuation of the series. Conversely, many Seasons 3/4 fans have never bothered to watch Seasons 1/2 at all, or have seen a very few episodes, and ignore them to concentrate exclusively on Seasons 3/4.

I'm a longtime fan of the entire series, and have been since it first aired in 1994. Since I don't dislike either Ray, and I'm a completist, I find the lack of cohesive discussion frustrating. In particular, trying to discuss later seasons while ignoring what came before seems fraught with pitfalls.

The lovely Due South privately run list shut down about a year ago (the first DS list ever, IIRC). It was set up when cast & crew would drop by, so fan fiction was not discussed, but there were some great episode discussions. I remember that VS generated numerous intense discussions, but all the episodes got time. One poster, Ed, was especially good at pulling together various episode trivia. He had a great post on Fraser's Cabin (which might have got posted to DS Discourse; I know I asked him to do that and he thought he might). When the list shut down, there were plans to resurrect it on Yahoo, but I'm not sure if it ever happened.

I was amazed DSOUTH-L lasted as long as it did, actually (tho I think it did move off the server in Turkey at one point after I had to give it up in 1996, didn't it? LOISCLA and DSOUTH-L were both there, and god love their admins for being sweet and understanding, cos for the time we were VERY high-volume lists...)

Date: 2005-07-13 02:19 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] taverymate.livejournal.com
Yeah, it eventually moved off the Turkish server. Jeannie was the list owner at the end, and she'd consistently done a great job. Volume dropped off dramatically compared to the first few years, but it wasn't moribund. It was such a mainstay I hated to see it go, especially since it was a great source for info on all things due South and Canadian-related. Very, very friendly list with great people.

If you could find examples on the mailing list of Season 1 or 2 discussion - even just a little - and get permission from the posters, I'd love it if you could post it here...

I'm emailing you directly regarding list discussion but depending on what you are looking for, it might be easier and faster to check out the due South newgroup. I've not checked in on it for a while, since AOL dropped all their newsgroups a few months ago & I've yet to try groups through Google. But the dS newsgroup, though lower volume in recent years, had a core of longtime posters - many were also on Dsouth-L - and there was often episode discussion.

Well, after checking my emails for reference, I found that I'd also posted about the House/DS connection on a Seasons 3/4 list as well as a Seasons 1/2 list. There was some brief discussion about the connection on both lists.

Date: 2005-07-13 02:15 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kassrachel.livejournal.com
I made a quick reference to it in my lj the next day: "House's Inuit story amused me a ton, as it apparently did everyone else whose fannish Venn diagram includes both House and due South."

I seem to recall assorted other fans of both shows mentioning it, but can't remember where I read that stuff offhand...

I'm afraid I don't know where to look for discussions of S1 and S2 dS, mostly because I'm not part of any discussion communities; at this point I just read fiction. (fwiw, [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction features fiction of all conceivable flavors, which I think is pretty neat.)

I think I made a post looking at the timing of Due South's run on TNT, and deciding that House watched it when he was laid up with the leg. And that he was a RayV fan. *frowns* Yep. Not much, but I did.

And, I don't see much discussion of seasons 1 and 2, but then, there isn't much DS meta going on at all, that I've seen. And you don't see much Fraser/RayV posted - though RayV/RayK keeps rising in popularity.

I do know some people who've never watched 1 and 2 which rather confuses me, as even though I'm Fraser/RayK, I like the first two seasons better. *shrugs*

Well, I decided that I really did need to check back in on the due South newsgroup and I ended up over at Google, browsing a bit (alt.tv.due-south). Not wild about the display options, but I think I'll get back in the habit of checking it regularly again.

Here are links to two threads discussing the House episode, the Inuit story, and the Due South connection.

It was a direct quote? *googles*

House: "When the Inuit go fishing, they don't look for the fish...they look for the blue heron."

Vecchio: Okay, how.
Fraser: When the Inuit go fishing Ray, they don't look for the fish.
Vecchio: I hate myself. So what do they look for?
Fraser: The Blue Herron
Vecchio: You're kidding me right?
Fraser: No I'm not Ray.
Vecchio: And where might we find this legendary bird?
Fraser: We begin by asking the people who'd know.
