Entertain me, I beg you - Top Five meme
Jul. 19th, 2005 06:16 pmI have been doing the VividCon dance for the past five days pretty much non-stop, and I need a little break. The meme apparently goes like this:
Ask me for "top five" lists of pretty much anything, and I will list you my top five of that thing or things.
Copy to your journal and let everyone else ask you for lists.
I need to think about something besides vids at this point just to clear my head. So please - ask me for lists! I *love* lists!

Date: 2005-07-19 11:31 pm (UTC)Hm. This is a tough one because I don't actually go for crossover *pairings*. I like the idea of well-written crossover stories, but they never involved "Character from Fandom A having a romance/sex with Character from Fandom B". Would it be okay with you if I just listed fannish universes I'd love to see crossed?

Date: 2005-07-19 11:44 pm (UTC)2) "But everyone could *tell* I'm not black!" (My mother, sadly. This is a poor and unfair representation of her as a whole person and the story is long and involved - basically she was nervous that I was going to a gay rights march and I couldn't understand why and reminded her that she'd marched on Washington with Martin Luther King for Civil Rights. She then blurted that out, and I realized she was concerned I might wind up on camera or something and people would think I was gay. Which is a whole other can of worms, but has more to do with "mommy and me" issues than my mom being a prejudiced person.)
3) "Dog spelled backwards is God, which is why you can be sure that a dog is a man's best friend." (A cab driver, who was serious. I didn't bring up all those foreign lands where dog spelled backwards is not God.)
4) "So, when will the aliens be returning to the Third Rock? Will we ever see the Third Rock?" ("Journalist" interviewing cast of Third Rock from the Sun.)
5) "I don't come to the theater to hear people *talk*." (One of two women who were sitting in front of me at a Tom Stoppard play, and left during intermission. Swear on my life.)

Date: 2005-07-20 12:17 am (UTC)Okay, *today's* answers, in no particular order:
1) "Sunday", for its harmonies, its multiple lyrical allusions to the painting and to the life, and it's goose-pimple-inducing crescendo.
2) "I Remember" for the overarching metaphor and because he managed to make a song sung by someone who lives in a department store astoundingly moving.
3) "Being Alive" because it couples an audacious, heart-pounding, soaring melody with hesitant, conflicted words of frustrated wants and needs. Fucking brilliant.
4) "The Road You Didn't Take" because I've been listening to it a lot. ;)
5) The entire score of Sweeney Todd. ... that doesn't count? If forced to pick one, then The Ballad of Sweeney Todd, if for no other reason than the irresistable hook of the vamp.

Date: 2005-07-20 12:06 am (UTC)Sigh. Okay - no particular order.
1) Sweeney Todd. Hands-down winner and still champion. Nothing compares; nothing will.
2) Urinetown. Because meta and musicals should always go together.
3) 1776, and not just because it is possibly the only thing left in this world to make me feel proud to be American.
4) Guys and Dolls. Possibly the best "show tune" score ever written.
5) The Golden Apple. Because it's exquisite, lush, hilarious, brilliant, ahead of its time, and one of the great tragedies of an audience failing the product (c.f. EZ Streets, Firefly).

Date: 2005-07-20 12:23 am (UTC)I can't really think of any *current* ones that bug me, but then I'm not getting out much. ;)
pop-culture quotes I remember gettting entirely sick of:
1) "Where's the beef?"
2) "This dog won't hunt."
3) "Makin' copies!" (That whole freaking thing with changing the names around OMG SHUT UP)
4) "Hasta la Vista Baby."
Oh, I *can* think of a current one -
5) "You're fired," complete with hand gesture.

Date: 2005-07-20 12:36 am (UTC)Well, If we're looking for all-gay all-the-time joy, I think, as you pointed out in your lj earlier, we need Ewan McGregor somewhere, because why stop now? And if we have Ewan, we need Jude Law, because they have been teasing us for years with their we-are-so-homosexual-friendly ways. Who could they be? The happy couple who shows Victor that he really needs to go back to Hugh Laurie, even though the Lambada is drawing him in with its forbiddenness? Will ponder.
We have Jen in there, don't we? She'll need a gal-pal to lean on - perhaps Kristen Bell as "spunky best friend". And we'll need a black Earth-mother type who takes care of all the wayward gaystrays - Queen Latifah?
So, Ewan, Jude, Kristen, and Queen L - and now we need Ian McKellen as our narrator, who is telling the whole story in flashback.

3) My bayberry green mock turtleneck. It's very difficult to find good green tops for my coloring. For some reason, the greens I most want are only used in men's shirts.
4) My suede coat from H&M. So. pretty.
5) My comfy yoga pants from Land's End. Anything that's basically pajamas, but acceptable to wear out of the house? Complete bonus in my eyes.

Date: 2005-07-20 06:07 pm (UTC)I think, oddly enough, many of my favorite moments are comedic.
1) "It IS puke?!"
2) Aeryn imitating the parasite-hunter's face in total seriousness.
3) "I am no one's puppet."
4) The scene in the elevator where John teaches Aeyrn the basics of slow-dancing.
5) Harvey's final scene. That, of everything, so brilliantly sums up a relationship, a metaphor, and the ways and means of Farscape.
