So. After months of not wanting to touch my system because of VividCon, I finally FINALLY got everything cleared so I could install my sparkly new OS today! Backed up ALL of VividCon to dvd-r, ALL of the ChicagoLoop to dvd-r, and what I *thought* was all of my internal hard drive, both to dvd-r *and* an external drive for safekeeping. Double-checked that all the folders were there.

Wiped internal for perfect, clean, shiny installation, and installed beautiful new OS.

Except.

Somehow (and by "somehow" I mean "I am some kind of HUGE FUCKING MORON for not paying closer attention and thinking things through") I did not back up 1) MY MAILBOXES, and 2) MY MUSIC FOLDER.

Yeah, that would be over 1,000 pieces of mail, and close to 60GB of music, gone.

A fine, fine Sunday all around.

Must. Make. Angrier. Icon.

I don't know how helpful it is, but remember, I've got all the music you had on the old computer. Can we figure out how I could restore just that to you?

From: [identity profile] tzikeh.livejournal.com
I think there's a way to restore from the iPod - and thank you for offering. If it comes to that, I may ask you to burn some stuff or transfer some stuff, but since the music went to you, I've imported about 30GB of other music.

Goddammit.

Thank you - I'll try it.

Once you start test driving your new OS, let us know what you think. I am still grimly holding onto 10.2.6 as I am mid-projects.

I still have some music you shared with me from before, and can zip 'em in a folder and send (when you say you are ready to receive). If you can recall as much music as you need replacing ASAP, let everyone know so we can check our own files to replace them for you (again, when you're ready for them).

I think you need chocolate. And liquor. Is there something tasty that combines the two and, possibly, whipped cream?

*sympathy*

Oh, man that sucks so bad. :( :( :( I take it this all happened after breakfast???

Do you have any computer geek friends who might be able to salvage anything?

Date: 2005-09-18 08:04 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tzikeh.livejournal.com
The pathetic part is I am a computer geek. And it's not salvageable. When a drive is wiped, it's completely erased, as if a magnet were passed over it. But thanks for the thought.

And yeah, after breakfast. :P

Oh my God. Honey, I *so* feel your pain and understand. I still haven't gotten over the loss of all of my email (which included treasured vid feedback) back in 2004. And the music! I'm so, so sorry.

Argh. I am so sorry.

I can't make this better, but I can offer you a copy of all my digitized music. Or, if you prefer, selected genres.

argh. Done that EXACT THING (in my case, I backed up the file structure and not the actual mailbox folder files) and that's just the worst feeling.

Feels sick to stomach.

When you post your "wanted" list for music, I'll see what I can do for you.

If you have a spare Mac with firewire that's capable of running 10.3, and can spring an extra $100 for some software I can send you a scan of an article showing how to turn it into a "backup" server.

I oh so feel your pain!
