For those of you who saw the Gay Ice-Skating Cowboys at VividCon last year (and those of you who didn't): Someone has posted it online. Now you don't have to fly to Chicago and visit me to see it!

Date: 2006-02-26 03:19 am (UTC)Three thoughts:
- Wow.
- Somewhere out there in the fannish hivemind, seventeen SGA badfic writers just snapped their heads up, gazed into the distance, and had an idea for a story where John is a gay ice skater and Rodney is his coach.
- The bonus amusement value of the video for me was the dozens and dozens of women in the audience screaming their lungs out, completely unaware that they need to be slash fans.

Date: 2006-02-26 03:22 am (UTC)That was one of the very first things I thought when I saw it for the first time - after I got over the ... well ... *IT*. Those women are enjoying it and they *Don't know why*.

Er, don't be so sure. Many (though granted not all) female figure skating fans are pretty aware of *why* they enjoy watching male figure skaters, though it's not something that's discussed all that often. Figure skating has such a long history as a sort of safe haven for gay sensibilities that they've pretty much become part of the language and image of the sport and are accepted amongst fans without much comment -- and with a *lot* of enjoyment. No, really. *g*
DenyE<--- long time figure skating AND slash fan
(BTW, for the commenter below, I haven't dl'd the clip, but from the description it sounds like a piece from "Stars On Ice," the figure skating show Scott Hamilton put together 20 or so years ago when he was cut from the Ice Capades and decided to go out on his own and produce a different sort of ice show. The norm back in the day was to give the women starring roles and the men... well. Even Olympic gold medalists could easily find themselves wearing a Smurf costume. He particularly wanted a balanced cast of male and female skaters and edgier choreography. And yes, he got it. They do a new show every year with a changing roster of skaters and the choreography the last few years has been by Christopher Dean. FWIW, at least 4 of the men involved in creating this piece (Hamilton, Dean, Browning, Zimmerman) have long term reps as happily married heterosexuals. Not that there's anything wrong with that...)

Date: 2006-02-26 04:44 am (UTC)That's... whew. What on earth is that from? There's an A&E logo on there, so it must've been something commercially broadcast. And I wanna know who all the skaters are!
