The joy of the impossible coming true -
Jun. 29th, 2006 09:22 pmMost major cities and suburbs have something called freecycle, which is basically exactly what it sounds like - a mailing list (at yahoogroups) where people in the area post stuff they're giving away for free, or people post to ask for stuff that someone out there might be willing to give away for free. The only obligation is that you come get the stuff. (Eternal thanks to
jacquez for pointing freecycle out to me!)
Your first post to the list has to be an offer, but after that you can ask for anything. I posted to give away a bunch of stuff I no longer used, and had it all immediately snapped up. After that I kind of lurked and just browsed the kinds of things people are giving away / looking for - often for amusement's sake. All sorts of stuff - Hello Kitty clocks, Nutri-System food, five half-empty bottles of nail polish, twenty small and medium stuffed animals, 55-gallon aquarium, Microsoft 97 (good luck), and my favorite so far: "boxes full of stuff my ex-husband wants."
Trust me - this story is going somewhere.
As many of you know, I had to put my grand piano into storage three years ago when I had to move out of my old, huge place, and I couldn't find anything in my price range with my requirements that had room for a grand piano. I've been living without it for so long; I almost forget that I own it, sometimes. And I deeply miss playing. And the other day, for a laugh, I posted to freecycle: "WANTED - piano: upright or console."
A woman in Skokie emailed me. She has an upright grand she played for years and years, but she has arthritis and can no longer play. She has a relatively small house and the piano is just taking up space and she wants to take up the carpet in that room anyway and I'm going up there tomorrow to look at it. All I'd have to do is pay for piano movers (about $100) and a post-move tuning (about $90).
$190 for an upright grand piano.
Cross all fingers and toes, please.

Date: 2006-06-30 04:43 am (UTC)expressing yourself through music or dance can be simultaneously cathartic and joyous, which makes it's extra tough to be unable to do so.
I sincerely hope this works out for you!
