Yuletide: My list / pimping / thoughts on barter!!

It's Yuletide Yuletide Yuletide time!

Naturally, I'm having trouble narrowing my list down to just six, but with great slicing and dicing, I've now got a mere sixteen (sigh):

ETA: Wow! You guys are awesome. I'm down to just *eight*, and I think movies_michelle is going to nominate Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which brings me theoretically down to nine, and jacquez has generously donated like, five of her six slots.

Everything I wanted to nominate may be nominated, plus possibly two more spots for two more fandoms! YAY FLIST!

Of course, what I'd love is for all of you possible Yuletide writers to do is run out and familiarize yourselves with all of these pronto so that you can offer to write them when the time comes. ;) But for the *most part*, I would strongly urge you to familiarize yourself with these even if you don't offer to write them, for your own enjoyment:

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang: A spectacular gem of an overlooked movie (see icon). While the icon is pimptastic re: slash, the move is so much more than that one moment. It's... an comedy-action-noir-thriller-buddy flick. If you haven't seen it you're missing out. Period.

Dexter: A new tv series on Showtime based on the Jeff Lindsay Dexter novels. It's about a blood-spatter forensic who is also a serial killer. Funny and gruesome and really really exciting to watch. Terrific cast headlined by Michael C. Ball of Six Feet Under fame, in a role that could not be more removed from his 6FU role (other than the "hangs around death" part), and including Julie Benz (Darla from the Buffyverse), Lauren Velez and David Zayas (late of Oz), and lots of blood. And dark, dark comedy. If you don't get Showtime, beg friends for copies of the episodes or look for torrents.

Without a Clue: This is not a *great* movie, but the Remington Steele-ish twist on the Holmes world, with Ben Kingsley as the Dr. Watson who solves the cases and Michael Caine as the actor Watson hires to portray the amazing detective Sherlock Holmes (no one will publish the stories of a *doctor* who solves crimes, you see), is a hoot - and the two leads have remarkably giddy chemistry with one another.

Oh, hell... I could do this for all my choices. Just find a way to slow time and watch them all, wouldya?

One last thought - who's up for a barter system? "I'll nominate X as one of my six if you nominate Y as one of your six"... I'm *so* not asking the Yuletide mods to get involved in that, but I am beyond certain that there have got to be more than one of you on my flist who want Life on Mars listed for Yuletide (or Hustle or Slings and Arrows...), and only one of us has to put it on our final six for it to get in. Seems a shame to waste a vote. :-D

I've been having trouble with this phase of the operation for a related but different reason; in past Yuletides I've never been v. vocal in the great suggest-more-fandoms frenzy, either, because it often seems to me that everyone else is thinking of plenty of stuff already. ("If this was an idea, someone would have had it already." "I find fault with that premise." Yes, I know. [g]) And there's hardly ever anything I really feel like I MUST MUST MUST be able to request; the requests part is the second-hardest for me, really. I'm pleased *that* someone is doing something for me, so it's difficult to get insisty about *what* she does for me, if you see what I mean.

All of which is by way of leading up to this: I know 1776 and Without a Clue, and I've got lots of Dexter on the TiFaux and just haven't got around to watching it yet, so I'd be happy to nominate those if you need someone to help you whittle down your list.

Oooh! I will take you up on those three - pinky-swear? And remember, nominating just puts them on the final list (if they qualify - and I'd bet cold hard cash these three do); it *doesn't tie you into writing any of them*. So muchas gracias!

BTW: There have only been two episodes of Dexter so far - are you sure your TiFaux isn't recording every single showing?

No, right, suggest/nominate ≠ offer -- right there with that. Which is what I'm saying -- there will be plenty for me to offer among what various people suggest, so I have no real driving need to suggest anything in particular. (But at the same time it does seem to be at least a little bit wise to make sure there are ≥3 things a person could offer, because nothing is guaranteed, right.) I'll nominate WaC and Dexter, but do you want me to hold off on 1776 until tv_elf answers your question? (A question I don't understand, incidentally -- she says she relisted it, which to me says she already nominated it, i.e. assuming it qualifies it's already in, so why waste a slot on it; the "final six" thing puzzles me.)

And: the TiFaux is definitely recording every single showing of Dexter, and I'm going to have to go in and zap all but one of each episode, but as the seasons have begun I've missed a couple of things here and there so I have most shows set to record all episodes rather than just new ones, for now -- like, when the cable screws up so I have 25 minutes of something, I don't want it not to grab the rerun on account of that's no longer a new first-run episode, you know?

Oh *thank you* for the heads-up! I'm gonna go look. I'm sincerely sickly into this show. shrift and I were talking about various fanfiction scenarios - you know, "Dexter having sex would be so weird and what would he really be thinking about to get turned on etc." and then we went to the "You know, he and his sister were both adoptees and aren't related..." *g* All *kinds* of fun to be had with Dexter. Plus? Really well-written and well-acted AND helps me with my basic Spanish aural comprehension!

Well, I got through those in The Eyre Affair and fforde got so much better IMO; I'm sure I can turn a blind eye.

Man, I have so many fandoms that I need to make icons for. It's sad. I have *sixty* open icon slots. I have fallen woefully behind in wasting valuable time in Photoshop making more icons in more fandoms to represent more post topics and thoughts.

Hm. The Dexter 1.03 I see available for torrenting is called "Lion's Den". On the website it's called "Popping Cherry". Is it possible that "Lion's Den" is 1.04, and they're counting the pilot as 1.00?

Oh, huh -- I'd dloaded, but (strangely) haven't had time to watch, so I hadn't even noticed that! The info I got said:

This is 100% legit. I've watched it and can verify that this is the new episode to air on Sunday. I got it from another torrent site, so I don't know the bitrate, etc.

So, I don't know why it was tagged "Lion's Den," but the other one I see that's not tagged LD also says it's "Popping Cherry" in the torrent info.

I relisted it because it was on last year's list, but the only way to ensure the characters I wanted were there was to pick it as one of the six.

Oooh - you are being extra-special wonderful to me (and yes, I'll take you up on that *g*). You know, this is turning out to be a "let's barter for tzikeh so she doesn't have to worry" thing, when I meant that the participants in Yuletide in general should set up a barter system (without involving the mods, who are like, insanely busy anyway). I wonder if I should just post the idea to the community but not like "let's start a thread" and more like "do in your own lj" thingy...
