1. Blues or pop?
Um. I live in Chicago, so I think my answer *should* be blues, and I disparage the Top 40, so my answer *shouldn't* be pop, but... pop. Pop, for me, encompasses a broader range of musical styles, and melodic variety is important in my music. This does not mean, however, that I don't sing the blues <g>.
2. How do you think that your tumultuous upbringing has strengthened you? Or do you? (okay that's 2 questions, posing as one)
Well, to answer the second part first, yes, I do think that my TU has strengthened me in many ways, but I also think it has weakened me in other ways. I can't judge if one side outweighs the other because I'm not exactly impartial, but I do think that the strengthening was a two-part process - first there was the abuse and neglect and anger and fear which ripped me to shreds, and then there was the study of that part of my life through therapy and distance which made me stronger, more independent, more thoughtful, more aware, more honest than I ever would have been if I'd had a more pleasant upbringing. It's true that adversity builds character, but that aphorism leaves out the part where you have to be willing to do the work of maintaning that building.
3. What do you consider your greatest strength?
Er. Um. Um. This is a difficult question - I immediately came up with answers which are for different questions (like "best trait" or "most likeable characteristic"). Um. Greatest strength. Um. I really? Have no idea.
4. Are you happy?
Oy. Am I happy. I am healthy, and I am solvent, and I have good friends and a fun job and I live in a time where entertainment abounds and my problems are generally the surface type. But happy is a funny old word - I would say I'm content. I think happy is a state you get to occasionally, just like unhappy is a state you get to occasionally.
5. What do you consider to be the worst manifestation of the human condition?
Willful ignorance.
