My American History prof and several other students were chatting after class about why some people are more likely to believe what they read or what they're told without bothering to ask questions or educate themselves (I can't remember how the subject came up in the lecture, which was about the English Puritans' battles with the Dutch Calvinists and how they affected Colonial New England). Anyway, I brought up the people who, despite all evidence to the contrary, would swear under oath that the Holocaust never happened, or that it happened, but the Jews did it to themselves, or that it happened, but not the way we think it did... you know who I mean, right? I certainly do; I certainly know who I mean -- which is why no one was more surprised than I when I started talking about the "Holocaust Retcon."

...

Maybe next week we can all chat about World Wank I and World Wank II, or perhaps even The Kerfuffle Between the States. In the meantime, I'm going to print out this week's posts to Metafandom and nail them to a church door.

I hate you, fandom. Don't look at me.

Oh deer jeebus, this is so gloriously wrong on so many levels ... I'm at work crying laughing.

And you wouldn't even be able to explain it to a co-worker if they asked you what was so funny. That's the best part.

Thanks for making me Queen! I'm impressed that you have that power!

*giggles* Did you have to explain what the word meant? To be fair, it does seem to be in wider use... although perhaps my contention that wider use = "a character used it correctly on Torchwood" is not correct. Considering that Torchwood is apparently run by fanboys. Heh.

(I think my favorite is "The Kerfuffle Between the States". *snicker*)

Actually, I just said "Uh, I mean, Holocaust revisionists" and went on. I wasn't really excited about stopping the conversation and explaining everything that would be required to understand the concept of "the ret-con". ;)

perhaps even The Kerfuffle Between the States.

Oh, don't get me started. I now (unwillingly) live in the South and work part time as a docent in a historic antebellum house. You wouldn't believe the amount of revisionist history I get thrown at me - my favorite was the guy that insisted with a straight face that the Kerfuffle was because the South had all the money and the North wanted it.

Yeah, I wanted to beat my head against the wall. And then beat his.

Hee! No problemo! And yes, I too would have wanted to bash his head in. But only after I tied him to a chair and explained, at length, just why he was so very, very, very wrong.

Then the violence.

Hahaha! This reminds me of the time I said to my boyfriend's mother (who is a children's librarian), "Oh, I didn't know Judy Bloom was still writing in the Fudge 'verse."

Snerk. Though, I must admit, most of my non-fannish friends are used to me using words they've never heard, or use in different contexts. "Chan" gets me every time.

I learned it as #4. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=chan

Then I was uploading content for one of the medical sites (I'm blanking on the title because I was going nonstop), one of their keywords was chan. I kept being a 4 year old boy and giggled.

I'm trying to look it up. It was a keyword for the meta tags. Sadly, I upload between 45 and 100 articles a month, so it all blends together.
