IMO, the only 100% lock is Mirren for The Queen. 98% Forest Whitaker for Last King of Scotland (O'Toole could spoil). After that, I think it's anybody's game. Supporting Actress probably to Jennifer Hudson, but Breslin is the spoiler. Direction? Everyone says "It's Marty's year", but they *always* say that and it *never* is. Me, I'd vote Greengrass; he doesn't stand a chance, but I'm so happy that he was nominated. I was sure that the Academy members would just lay the DVD aside and think "I heard this was astounding. Too bad I'll never watch it." I think it *does* have a great shot at the editing category, though.

How much would I love Little Miss Sunshine to win Screenplay?

If nothing else - wow, what a great year for movies. I don't think there's an undeserved nomination in the whole list. In fact, there are equally deserving movies that didn't make it - and not because something unworthy did. Just too much good film to go around. Yay!

I feel bad for not (as of yet) having seen more of the movies. Living in the middle of nowhere sometimes really sucks. I will say, however, that it is nice to have two actress categories where they all actually deserve a nom. There isn't a single "We gotta fill this spot, so just throw in someone pretty" nomination in the whole bunch.

My only questions is what the hell source did Borat get adapted from? Do they honestly count his show as a source? I keep having visions of a best-selling "autobiography" written by Borat, titled, "Niiiiice" (complete with cover photo of him grinning with two thumbs up). ahahaha. I guess this is like the pimp song that won last year, isn't it? It's that moment where you look at the academy voters and start to question their taste... Hee.

Yup - original means it's never been presented in any form anywhere else. Adapted means it has.

Oh, I disagree - I thought Hard out Here for a Pimp was far and away the best song that year. In fact, it didn't make me question the Academy so much as it made me cheer (again - Eminem's win was the first time) for the fact that they're not longer dominated by doddering old blue-hairs who would be content to vote for Barbra Streisand until they die.

also...

Borat is the funniest film I've seen in a *very* long time. Niiiiiiiice!

The only major beef I have with the list is that Children of Men (hands down the best movie I've seen in the past year) didn't get a Best Picture or Best Director nom. But the nominations it did score were for substantial awards, so I guess I'll just quietly grumble.

I echo your yay! re. Little Miss Sunshine.

I really must go watch The Queen.

Oh, you *really* must go watch The Queen.

I can understand your beef, but which film / director would you remove to place Children of Men on the list?

It's a tough call, since I haven't seen Babel or Letter from Iwo Jima yet. I liked Departed and loved Little Miss Sunshine, but thought CoM was a better film than those two -- it left me shaken and had me thinking back on the film for days afterward. And I don't know if I want to see Babel, frankly. I watched the director's 21 Grams back in 2003 and had very mixed feelings about it, and Babel seems to be the same sort of film.

Yay for Little Miss Sunshine!

It's the film we were watching when I had my stroke on Christmas Day, and I still think it's awesome. :-)

I would looooove Sunshine to win. I think the only undeserved nom I can spot on the list is The Queen in the screenplay category--the performances in that movie were lovely and the direction quite effective, but I found the screenplay remarkably weak.

Although I'm rooting for Notes on a Scandal for adapted screenplay, I would certainly love to see the Borat team's acceptance speech. I think I'll happily settle for knowing that the presenters will have to say the title.

Also that presumably Al Gore will win an Oscar. I'm pro-that.

Oh GOD how great will that be. At least this time they know the votes will be tabulated fairly.
