From USA Today: Computer tech wipes out info on $38B fund

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Perhaps you know that sinking feeling when a single keystroke accidentally destroy hours of work. Now imagine wiping out a disc drive containing an account worth $38 billion.

That's what happened to a computer technician reformatting a disk drive at the Alaska Department of Revenue. While doing routine maintenance work, the technician accidentally deleted applicant information for an oil-funded account — one of Alaska residents' biggest perks — and mistakenly reformatted the backup drive, as well.

There was still hope, until the department discovered its third line of defense, backup tapes, were unreadable.

You can read the rest here.

Losing a vid-in-progress just doesn't seem so traumatic, now....

Gah! *facepalm*

But the rest of the story is the reason why the premise of Dark Angel makes me shake my head. Just because all the digital info is gone doesn't mean that there's not a MILLION METRIC TONS of hardcopy available to recreate all the files.

I wonder if the guy was fired?

At work, we like to sometimes sit around and trade "stupid thing I deleted accidentally" stories. This guy would totally win if he were one of my coworkers. *g*
