I don't have a "default" icon per se. Mostly because the LJ layout I like puts your default icon somewhere I don't like, so I just put an invisible marker .gif as my default, and then try to remember to pick an icon when I post.

That said, the icon I'm using here is one of two I tend to think of as my default, and it's the one I made. The other is a zen fen icon that was made by someone else.

Almost all of my fannish icons are made by other people because they're better at it than I am. The nonfannish ones are largely made by me because they're, well, odd. *g*

As for my default, it changes maybe two or three times a year, and is usually either nonfannish or (like my current default) obscurely or tangentially fannish. Unless one considers vegetables a fandom, which... well, it's plausible for *me*.

My default icon hasn't changed in years. I think it covers quite a lot about me: a love of anime, a love of weapons, etc. I am contemplating changing my default to the deer, however. *g*

I wouldn't mind more icons made by other people, just because I suck at making them. You can generally tell the icons made by me because they have simple, non-striking fonts--or absolutely no words at all. I like pretty men, and sometimes the image says it all.

I used to bop around between default icons fairly rapidly, and they were mostly either fannish or theatre-related. Just recently I started having a more generic one that represented the season, and choosing a simple layout to go with it. Not sure why, exactly, but I'm liking it and will probably stick with it.

I chose "Are made by me" even though I have *some* icons made by other people. Most of the time, though, I'm just too neurotic to have an icon I didn't make (or at least edit) myself, you know, so it feels like ME. *g*

My default icon was originally made by me, but then I asked one of the make-icons-for-you communities to clean it up for me, since my image-manip skills suck. And actually I forgot that two others were made by other people too! Oops.

I don't put my name in my icons, because they all show my avatar in one way or another, so basically I think that's recognizable enough even without repeating my username. And my default has never changed, but I don't use it very often either, except when I can't find an icon that would fit better for that particular post or comment. And that then usually results in me making a new icon, so the frequency of my default icon usage has steadily decreased over the years. *g*

This is my default icon, which I almost never use for posts. I don't put my LJ name on things, because I don't believe in using names that much. Of course, who is the character in the icon? Janet Weiss (or "Dammit, Janet") from RHPS. So it IS my name, well, kinda...

My default icon is pretty much the ONLY icon I have that was actually made by me. Well, that and my icon of Paul Gross doing his spazztastic dance, but I was clearly on crack then, so. My default hasn't changed in ... um ... you know, I can't remember a time when I had a different default icon. So that should tell you something! I've grown rather attached to it even if I never actually use it when I post. It feels like *me* in a way that icons made by other people don't.

And I use icons for moods, too! Even though I also have a mood theme.

My default icon was made by me, and since it's a hyperspaz animated gif, it not only includes my lj name, but my real name and a lengthy artsy-fartsy quote I had to set in super-tiny font to squeeze into the box. People often don't see my icon, see, because it's moving *so fast*. Just stare at the space next to my name for a few hours, and then you'll see it... *heh*

I make most of my own icons, but since I only have MS Paint, I will occasionally ask other people to help me make animated icons or whatnot. Also use the occasional gift icon/icon snurched from elsewhere; currently, five out of six are made by me, while one was taken from lilformers.com.

I tend to use one or two defaults per major fandom, so they generally last a pretty long time. My first default had my fannish name on it (with a reasonably relevant fannish screencap), but I haven't used my name on icons since.

I make most of my own icons but I have a few that were given me or that I snagged from shared icons for various reasons. My default icons are seasonal, I have one each for Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter, with a couple of holiday ones for special occasions. But sometimes I get tired of those as defaults and put up something like parasols or a butterfly for a default. I don't generally use fannish icons as defaults.
