Five million copies of Order of the Phoenix were sold in one day (Saturday) in the U.S. That's twice as many as last year's best-selling hardcover novel (Grisham's The Summons) sold in 12 months.

J.K. Rowling makes a 15% royalty rate on the cover price. She made $22.5 million from the U.S. on Saturday alone.

Dear God. That's a dazzling lot of money.

I'm torn between wild jealousy, and being really happy to hear that *any* author (especially of books I love) is making that kind of dough. :-)

Especially because in an interview Rowling said that librarians are reporting that kids come in browsing the fantasy section looking for books that will give them the same thrill. Rowling said she hoped they would realise that *any* book transports you to another world, even the gritty realistic ones, and hoped that they would eventually branch out. If one author is wildly popular, I'm pretty sure that makes more room for other authors (of more modest popularity) in her wake.
