Waitress opens today in New York and Los Angeles. It stars Keri Russell and Nathan Fillion, and the reviews are almost unanimously lovely. The trailer absolutely sells me on the film (Nathan or no); I can't wait for it to open in Chicago. The film was written and directed by Adrienne Shelley (she is also in the film), whom some of you may recognize from her roles in Hal Hartley films. She was murdered shortly after Waitress was accepted at Sundance, but before the festival occurred, which is so damn sad for many reasons. At the Sundance premiere, her widower announced the formation a scholarship in her name, which will benefit women independent filmmakers.

It looks like Shelley would have been a terrific addition to the woman's independent film scene. Check out the trailer and see for yourself.

OMG, I had no idea she'd been murdered!

Yeah, isn't it just fucking awful. When I heard about it all I could think was "what on Earth for?", which is a weird and somewhat callous reaction, I guess.

I'd been seeing a lot about this because of her murder, but I had never picked up that Nathan Fillion was in it. It has been getting a lot of positive word of mouth since it premiered at Sundance.

Thanks for the heads-up.

 I'm glad to hear that the movie stands entirely on its own, so that the "notoriety" won't play into the response to it.

Shelley also played a pivotal guest role in the second season Homicide episode A Many Splendored Thing. I was really sad to hear of her murder, and I'm excited to see the movie.

That is this Nathan Fillion character y'all are always on about? My god! He's is HOT!! How did he get such a desperately unsexy name?!

Dude, how have you managed to make it this long in fandom and never even *seen* a picture of Nathan Fillion??

As they said on House - "SERIOUSLY?!"

Hie thee to Netflix or bittorrent or something and get watchin' Firefly, woman!

Surely I had seen a picture of him, just never knowing that that's who I was seeing. Seriously, the name Nathan Fillion doesn't just turn you off? I mean, it's so hard to read. It looks like it has four Ls when you're just scanning quickly.

Actually, in all seriousness, I'm so dim about who actors are, and there are so many well-known movies and t.v. shows that I've never seen that about 70% of the names that get thrown around on LJ go right over my head, and I don't bother worrying about it too much. The only reason his name even managed to penetrate my consciousness was because of how frequently I see it.

And also, based on what I just saw in that trailer, I don't think the pictures do him justice.

I don't think a name has ever turned me off. Is that something that happens to you often? I'm curious, now! Does this happen to lots of people?

And if you liked what you saw in the trailer -- FIREFLY. It's easy to swallow whole, as there are only 15 episodes and a movie. Plus, you know, it's awesome. And he's the star. In tight pants. And sometimes in no pants. And the show is awesome. And I'm sure I mentioned that it's awesome.

I'm getting the impression that you want me to watch Firefly. You had me at "tight pants."

Does it happen to me often? Hmmm. Not often, but there are names I have aversions to. Like Harriet. My deep, abiding love of Harriet the Spy cannot counteract the horrific, non-fictional Harriets I have known.

Yes, I suggest Firefly for your viewing pleasure. Just be SURE you watch it in the intended episodic order (the DVDs have it right) and not as it was aired on FOX (which made no sense at all and likely led to its early cancellation).

Previews:

Here is Captain Tightpants himself, with two of Serenity's crewmembers (Jayne to the left and Zoe to the right).

Here is Captain Tightpants as Captain Nopants, from the episode "Trash".

And here is Nathan, being Nathan. Actually, this is quite sedate for Nathan, who is a geek and a dork and an all-around hilarious guy. He roleplays his own character from Firefly in an online Firefly RPG. He is our God.

You know, you really know how to pimp. If I wasn't already a Firefly/Nathan Fillion fan, I'd be jumping in to try it. :-)

Thank you. I try. I've had a long and glorious history of it ;)
