Waitress opens today in New York and Los Angeles. It stars Keri Russell and Nathan Fillion, and the reviews are almost unanimously lovely. The trailer absolutely sells me on the film (Nathan or no); I can't wait for it to open in Chicago. The film was written and directed by Adrienne Shelley (she is also in the film), whom some of you may recognize from her roles in Hal Hartley films. She was murdered shortly after Waitress was accepted at Sundance, but before the festival occurred, which is so damn sad for many reasons. At the Sundance premiere, her widower announced the formation a scholarship in her name, which will benefit women independent filmmakers.
It looks like Shelley would have been a terrific addition to the woman's independent film scene. Check out the trailer and see for yourself.

Date: 2007-05-02 10:49 pm (UTC)I'd been seeing a lot about this because of her murder, but I had never picked up that Nathan Fillion was in it. It has been getting a lot of positive word of mouth since it premiered at Sundance.
Thanks for the heads-up.

Date: 2007-05-03 03:46 am (UTC)Actually, in all seriousness, I'm so dim about who actors are, and there are so many well-known movies and t.v. shows that I've never seen that about 70% of the names that get thrown around on LJ go right over my head, and I don't bother worrying about it too much. The only reason his name even managed to penetrate my consciousness was because of how frequently I see it.
And also, based on what I just saw in that trailer, I don't think the pictures do him justice.

And if you liked what you saw in the trailer -- FIREFLY. It's easy to swallow whole, as there are only 15 episodes and a movie. Plus, you know, it's awesome. And he's the star. In tight pants. And sometimes in no pants. And the show is awesome. And I'm sure I mentioned that it's awesome.

Does it happen to me often? Hmmm. Not often, but there are names I have aversions to. Like Harriet. My deep, abiding love of Harriet the Spy cannot counteract the horrific, non-fictional Harriets I have known.

Here is Captain Tightpants himself, with two of Serenity's crewmembers (Jayne to the left and Zoe to the right).
Here is Captain Tightpants as Captain Nopants, from the episode "Trash".
And here is Nathan, being Nathan. Actually, this is quite sedate for Nathan, who is a geek and a dork and an all-around hilarious guy. He roleplays his own character from Firefly in an online Firefly RPG. He is our God.
