here.

I am beginning to look forward to this film with far more enthusiasm than I had before. I think I'm slowly learning to employ [livejournal.com profile] elynross's trick of smoothly compartmentalizing my emotional connection to original sources from how I feel about their movie adaptations, to which I should have completely separate reactions because they are their own creatures.

Ooh I cant wait! That's a good trick and what I try to do with the Harry Potter movies. It's kind of like fanfic in a way.

Yeah - I did that with the Harry Potter films as well -- the first two were flat-out awful movies, in my opinion. Nothing to do with the books being good or bad, or the adaptation being good or bad; they were just bad *movies*. The third was a terrific movie; I think even someone who hasn't read the books or seen the first two films could watch Azkaban and enjoy the hell out of it. The fourth was decent and well paced, if a bit of a let-down after Azkaban. I have very high hopes for #5. The film certainly *looks* terrific from what we can see in the trailers.

The first one was terrible. I wrote a paper about why. ;-)

I don't remember that the second one was bad, but that could be simply by comparison.

I'd looked at this some time ago. I remember spending quite some time on their website, and being cautiously optimistic about some of their casting choices. I know they had to call the Church something else in order to make the movie, but since it was change the name or the concept, I thought it was a good call, and not a terrible name-change, either. I wish I could remember the details.

Did you have to wait on the publication of the third book, too? That was a long-ass wait.

Oh, huh -- I had heard that they had to remove the concept completely. That was one of the huge speed-bumps I had going into trying to get excited for the film. Changing the name... ... ... nope, still pisses me off. ;) But again, letting the movie be what it is and nothing more.

I did have to wait for Amber Spyglass -- I found out about the series after the first two had come out and so I ate those up right away, and then came the wait. Ugh.

They're calling it the Magisterium, but it looked to me like they were keeping the concept the same. Have you seen the website (http://www.thegoldencompassmovie.com)?
