Why I love my History professor

Here is the answer I gave on a midterm question about how the Spanish-American war resulted in a U.S. empire, and the long-term fallout from it (after explaining the intricacies of the war, which including phrases like "sail round the world, stick a flag in").

Let's do a headcount. From NOTHING, we have now annexed Hawai'i, Puerto Rico, and Guam; we have protectorship over Cuba and the Philippines. We have achieved EMPIRE! YAY! But here's the thing -- we didn't *want* EMIPRE! Because now we have to defend it! Like we didn't have enough problems *without* all these damned islands! OMGWTFUSA?

But hey, on the upside: sugar's *awesome*. Then again, we could extrapolate that the Spanish-American War led to both the ongoing political argument concerning America's need for a "national language", and the current obesity "pandemic". DAMN YOU, SPAIN! DAMN YOU TO HELL! I SHAKE MY FIST AT YOU THUSLY (shakes fist).

Got an A.
