Sweeney Todd Too Gory?
Studio wants Burton's macabre musical toned down.

Warner Bros. reportedly wants director Tim Burton to tone down some of the gore and violence in his big-screen version of the Broadway musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street....
What.

I won't quote more from the article, since it's kinda spoilery if you don't know the show, but...

What.

Just... what.

What movie did you THINK you were making??

WHAT.

Are you fucking... WHAT?!

This is a HORROR movie. The singing doesn't make it somehow not a HORROR movie.

What.

I read about that a few days ago and it also really irritated me. Not sure where I read, but I think it said that they wanted to take the material and make it PG-13 or something. I was, essentially, rendered speechless at the news.

Did they miss the bit with the killing and the grinding and the pies, then?

The thing is, the studio really likes the film and they want to make it accessible to as big an audience as possible

Studio execs, please form an orderly line so I can smack you.

They've made Toby 10 years old?

See, look -- children shouldn't be going to see this *in the first place*. So an R-rating will still leave the film as accessible to it's intended audience as a PG-13 would. Teens will sneak in anyway.

This is just DUMB.

You know, I'm actually okay with that - it makes sense. Orphan kids went to workhouses or were "hired" away by whoever could use them -- that makes sense for Pirelli and also makes it clear that his affection for Mrs. Lovett is that of a child for a mother figure.

But... WHAT.

Yeah, missed that bit. They heard "Johnny Depp" and went YAY, is my guess.

HORROR. MOVIE.

I dunno. 10 seems too young for me. Maybe 12 minimum ---actually, I would have preferred a teenager since Toby obviously has a crush on Lovett.

As for the rating, I've seen Sweeny many, many times on stage and except for the judge's song, it really is PG-13. Sounds like Burton upped the blood quota a bit.

Personally, I'm fine with that but I could understand why they're hoping for a wider audience. I wonder if it will appeal to the traditional horror audience ---I suspect not.

And that's why you shouldn't greenlight scripts on an empty stomach. They probably stopped reading at the word "pie" and went down to the cafeteria.

That's the only explanation I can think of for how they wouldn't know what the entire story is about.

... okay, I'll admit -- if I were a studio exec looking over a proposal and I saw "Johnny Depp" and "pie", I would greenlight the project without a second thought.

Still.

(Mmm. Johnny Depp and pie.)

hahahaha, there's probably an exec sitting around going "What do you mean he's not a baker?"

(True confession: I would totally see a Johnny Depp-the-piemaker movie)

This reminds me of when Gladiator came out, and a friend of ours went with us to see it. As the trailers ran out, she said "Now this isn't going to be violent, is it?"

Oh. Dear. God. *headdesk of massive proportions*

And, waitaminnit, is that Toby they're referring to as a "ten-year-old boy"? Is he really? 'Cause that's...really quite cool, actually. Although I'm having trouble imagining what "Not While I'm Around" will sound like.
