If you want to know what brought on the Gay Pants Insanity of 2003 - you can find it here.

I still maintain it was in the living room, not on the computer, but memory's a funny thing. :-D

GAY! PANTS!

Funny how that works... Prospect-L (a slash discussion list for The Sentinel) had its own gay pants discussion back in the summer of 2000, starting with message 3839. Gay pants must be one of those racial memory things that various groups come up with independently.

But that's not the original fannish origin - that would date it in 2002, and it's definitely older than that. In fact, I know it was mentioned in Highlander and Sentinel fandoms well before that - I recall at least one public "hey, are Duncan's pants in this picture gay or not?". (I think my response was "they're not gay, they're Eurotrash".) It's spread pretty widely since then - I've seen it in lots of fandoms. I think it also came up on fca-l a few times, though the archives to that are lost (to the best of my knowledge - [livejournal.com profile] cereta would know for sure).

Let me see if I can find references...yes. This post from May 2001:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Prospect-L/message/11801
lists earlier posts (including entire threads) about Jim Ellison's gay pants in Sentinel fandom.

Highlander references...can't find 'em, as I can't recall which of 2390482304982 lists they were on. Grar.

But then, what is reality but our perceptions of it...
