This is a false equivalent (I'm not saying you're saying they're equal; I know you're not. About the certificate mentioned above: a man came up to the reference desk last week, talked elections a little. Then he said that Obama is Kenyan. Both of us said, no, that's his father. So is he, he said. No, he's not, we repeated, that was his father, he himself was born in Hawaii. So is he, he insisted, nobody's ever found the birth certificate. I said, but he has a passport, you can't have a passport without a birth certificate. [The look on his face as this bit of data started his worldview a-crumbling was priceless.] He has a passport? he said. Yeah, I said, he can't travel around without one. [We got distracted at that point and couldn't continue the conversation.]
