oh no, the internet is here! lol, that was awesome. I have to wonder how many people are extremely confused right now. I had to explain to my parents why I was laughing, and they still don't quite get it.
For all everyone mentions the internet in media, it's actually kind of rare that internet phenomenons or memes permeate the public consciousness, so this is just brilliant.
It's - oy. Someone on the 4chan board came up with a kind of link joke: they'd post something a link with text like "Bush Threatens War With Iran", but the link would take anyone who clicked on it to a picture of a duck on wheels. This was called "duckrolling", and someone who clicked had been "duckrolled". Then someone changed that joke by having their fake link lead to Rick Astley's video for "Never Gonna Give You Up" on YouTube, and so became "Rickrolling", and "Rickrolled". That spread from 4chan to, well, all of the internet, and you can get rickrolled pretty much anywhere by anyone at this point.
It moved out into RL a while ago -- some of the Scientology protests earlier this year blasted the song from boomboxes outside the Churches. But nobody's ever rickrolled ten million people before. Genius.
Nor could I. I enjoyed hearing the screaming from the people lining the streets too -- I could see some parade planners fearing it would be too obscure. OBVIOUSLY NOT.
