Dreamwidth, as some of you probably know, is an open-source project dedicated to creating a social networking site not unlike LJ, except without all the crappy parts and with many more good parts. Since the news about the Livejournal firings (are they firings, really? Or layoffs?), things have been stepped up a bit, as far as I can tell. At the bottom of the page I just linked are several mailing lists (some open, some moderated) for discussion and updates about Dreamwidth's progress. I've been on the DW-discuss list for a while now, and it's been fascinating to watch. Of course, today should be an interesting day on the lists. I recommend joining.
IF YOU CODE: Dreamwidth has a mailing list where they post when they need volunteers. Possibly there will be posts today. ;)
They are working on full lj-portability, though it's doubtful that any comments will be transferrable; as pointed out on the discussion list, it would be too easy to edit any comments to make it seem like anyone said anything.
For lj-backups, you can use LJ Dump, which will work on all platforms (it's in Python), and liz_marcs has a bunch of links to PC-friendly lj backup programs. (I think LJ Book, which she lists, also works for Macs.)
Anyway, that's about all I know right now. I guess I'll go see which of my other journals are still active, and keep those in mind just in case.
Meh.

Date: 2009-01-07 03:56 am (UTC)I'm seeing friends laid off ALL OVER, including TONS of Silicon Valley friends.
Welcome to our recession, people.
I've lived through 2 of them as an adult, so this is just deja vu to me.
