BSG. All-righty!
Jan. 16th, 2009 11:19 pmSo.
1 - Thirteenth Colony was all Cylons. And they colonized Earth. And, at least according to the flashbacks, there was a horrible nuclear attack in which most of them, if not all of them, perished. And Ellen (btw called it thanks) had something set up so that some of them would be reborn. Which will be interesting to learn about.
(All five of the "Final Five" were the front lines of the Colonies' rebellion against the Cylon occupation on New Caprica, which was another reason I ticked the box for Ellen in the "who is it" game. And if Ellen was one of these special unique and original five, and Saul killed her, then is she Really Most Sincerely Dead? And if so, will this *finally* push Saul over the edge?)
2 - Dee. Well. I guess, if you're gonna go all "Fuck this noise, I'm checking out", it makes sense to do everything you can possibly do to force into existence one happy moment, so you can die happy. Unfortunately (for me), that was all tell and no show, and the actress simply wasn't good enough to carry it off. (That may also be down to scenes being cut, etc., but I've never felt she was a very strong performer and this required a whole lot of dexterity she didn't have.)
3 - Kara! My theory: KrispyKara was our original Kara. She got alllll burned up on fire, just like we saw, and her Viper exploded, just like we saw. KurrentKara is a big ol' Starbuck Omelette made from Grade-A Starbuck eggs what the Cylons done stole from Starbuck that one time, remember? In that one episode with the Cylon who took her ovary? With the eggs in it? That we never came back to? Yeah. And since her original theory about surviving the explosion was that the Cylons pulled her and her Viper out before she exploded, it's possible that they merely replaced her *after* she exploded. Or some such. I guess we shall see.
4 - I liked that Leoben's whole world-view just got fucked up. He's the only model who has been completely woo-woo about the prophecy shit without fail; even Cavil, who is pretty clear on the do's and don'ts, is a practical guy. Leoben knows Kara's not a Cylon, so the fact that there are two of her makes EVERYTHING NOT TRUE. This is what happens to people who invest too deeply in a single outcome of a narrative. (Shut up, kettle. Suck it.)
5 - Roslin. Well, yeah. Once again, invested too deeply in the single outcome of a narrative. And Adama has it even worse - refused to invest too deeply, then came around to seeing it that way, then got gut-punched. I believe all of you know what I think their next moves should be (WILL YOU TWO HURRY UP AND HAVE SEX!! CAN'T YOU SEE RON AND DAVID ARE GOING TO KILL YOU ALL?????)
Sheesh.
So - the bigger picture. If the thirteenth colony was Cylons, and they were (all-but) wiped out in a nuclear strike, was that attack perpetrated by humans, in that whole happened-before/happens-again cycle, and the series we've been watching has just been the Yang to that Yin? Do we have a cycle of humans who make Cylons who *make* humans who *make* Cylons who blah blah blah we're-all-Cylon-cakes? And if not, what differentiates us? They could tell from the bones that the remains were Cylon, not human, but they didn't say what was different, really. And the remains are *bones*. So, are we Cylons? Are Cylons humans? Are humans machines? Does any of this technology allow for me getting my very own David Tennant in the near future?
These are the things I wonder about.
Does this mean Dylan and Shakespeare were Cylons? Because they've kinda been all over the fucking show in the last few episodes.
Hm.
*waits patiently for a David Tennant model*
ETA: Also the title! GENIUS! The multiple parallels of symbolism in the novel and (perhaps slightly less subtly) in the episode - all rule. Though you know, if you were going to fuck about with "All Along the Watchtower", Ron, you might as well have put "Goodnight Irene" somewhere in there....

I'm too sleepy to think at this point.

Date: 2009-01-17 07:42 am (UTC)Hm. I assumed the previous nuclear war was due to a Cylon Civil War, much like we have now (what happened before will happen again)
I do think the reason humans had to leave Kobol and the 13th tribe went to Earth was tied to something Human/Cylon related.
