Break-in; we're all safe

So, I came home and noticed that my laptop desk was on the couch, but my laptop was not. I thought that was really odd, but I thought maybe I'd moved it and put the blanket over it or something. Went to Walgreens to get cat food, and when I came back (the back door is where my office is), I saw that there were two wires on the floor - which used to be connected to my camcorder. I told
shrift that someone had broken in.
Turns out they'd come in through my bedroom window, which was why Shrift found the place cold when she came home. People who live in the building have just been leaving the back gate open, because you actually have to bother to pull it closed when there's snow or ice (it just closes and locks behind you in spring and summer).
And Artemis was here, and thank EVERYTHING she's all right. Oh my God.
So, that along with other current problems I'm going through makes today the BEST DAY EVER.
I'm waiting for the police now. I don't think we're unsafe--they clearly wanted to get stuff that they could sell and get out fast, and they didn't even open the door to
shrift's room--but I'm FUCKING PISSED OFF.
(P.S. Everyone who rents should have renter's insurance. I do, though I bet that phone convo will be fun.)

Date: 2009-01-27 02:40 am (UTC)My one experience with break-in, police, etc. was that they were nice and all, but got fingerprint gunk everywhere (which I, of course, got to clean up along with the mess the burglar left), and not surprisingly never got my stuff back.
Funnily enough, the burglar left a bag of weed (which the police didn't find, and I didn't find it until after they'd left). IIRC, it wasn't very good shit, but it *was* some small consolation at a bad moment.
