Dreamwidth!

tzikeh: (dreamwidth not lj)
[personal profile] tzikeh

Thanks to a Mysterious Benefactor who kindly offered me an code, I am now tzikeh over at Dreamwidth. I'm not leaving lj in the foreseeable future, but I will be using Dreamwidth's cross-posting features to keep both journals simultaneously. If you want a great summary of what Dreamwidth is, and what it is not, foxfirefey has a great post that explains the many ways DW differs from LJ in a *good* way, what else they plan to implement, etc. the_shoshanna has also made a post with links to DW's guiding principles page, diversity statement, and news journal.

I'm still browsing around over there and checking out all of the nifty features--read vs. access has won my heart the most so far--but I expect to be posting there full-time (with cross-posting to lj) by summer.

If you're already on Dreamwidth, drop me a comment with your DW identity!

I'm so torn! I want to go, but all my SCA peeps are here, and considering how often I don't update, having two would only make things worse.

They are *serious* about ease of cross-posting. I'd do it.

I'm there on Open ID as twistedchick.livejournal.com; I hope to get a Dreamwidth account on the 30th.

The only thing I'm having trouble with is the whole thing where if you're already on, you're on, and if you're not then you need a code, but nobody tells you where to get one of those, and you can join with OpenID but then you'd have to redo everything anyway if you got one of those mysterious codes, and it all feels murky and cliquey to me...which I don't think is their intention at all, given what I've read about it.

It's only until April 30th, when they go into open Beta, that you need an invite code. And if you join the mailing list, or hang out in the irc room, or any number of things, you could wind up with a code between now and April 30th.

Their website says: Dreamwidth Studios will open to the public on the evening of April 30, 2009. At that time, you can create an account with an invite code from an existing user, or purchase a paid account. To me, that sounds like you'll need an invite code then, as well.

What happens when you do Open ID? Do you have to get a new account? And if not, are you stuck with the initial (whateverjournal.com) user name? That wasn't clear, either.

I don't know, cuz I'm not on the back-end team, but these are perfect questions to ask on the mailing list or in the chatroom. The DW faq has the info for joining, or I can tell you if you're interested.

I'm watching their news comm, but couldn't find anything in their FAQ about a mailing list.

I'll probably just wait until April 30, or even the late summer open launch or whatever it's called.

hopefully this will be helpful.

denise and mark and the dev team are giving out codes through e-mail to people who have joined with openID and validated and e-mail address or have contributed to the project or who are signed up to one of the mailing lists. they are only giving out a handful of codes a day to make sure the servers won't crash. technically dreamwidth is still in closed beta, the open beta will start on april 30th. once in open beta you can join by buying time or for free with an invite code. news is posted regularly at http://dw-news.dreamwidth.org/

Thank you!

I will probably be just as late to that party as I was to LJ, but I'll get there eventually. :)

if you hang out in the irc room, you'll get lots and lots of info. And lots and lots of fisting. But that's secondary. It's a great place to ask all these questions, and it's really not murky or cliquey at all. Seriously. I hung out in chat for a few days and someone sent me a code. That's *all I did*. Chatted a bit about DW and fisting. Also, join the mailing list; they hand out a few codes to people on the list. And this is only til April 30th.

I am aware of this mythical Dreamwidth in the same way that one is aware of the Loch Ness Monster, so I shall ask: how does one get this mysterious invite code?
