Why is it that, every single semester, without fail (or maybe I should say FULL OF FAIL), I get a professor in the College of Ed who is racist, sexist, or senile?

Or all three?

Tenure.

And old farts that don't know when to fade into the background.

Because tenure is a three-edged sword.

Are these characteristics more common among your professors than the general population? If they are only *as common* it merely means they aren't actually working in some positive way to avoid this, so it'd be just inertia?

My senior year in college, I heard a professoor refer to me, when he didn't see me behind him, as "that fat Jewish girl." I was enraged, appalled and very hurt. So I reported him, was told it was not the first report they'd heard on him, but that "well, he's got tenure, so there's nothing we can do." I was 21, and stupid enough to believe that. Today, as I am still Jewish, no longer fat but way, way older and not easily cowed, I'd have a hell of a lot more to say, to a hell of a lot more people. There's no excuse for racism or sexism in a class. As for senility...well, you may have a tenure issue there, and I'm not sure anything can be done until the guy croaks.
