Ooh. lapislaz's link discloses that the hobby models are made by Quantum Mechanix. Their page has a small closeup of the ship's name and registry; it links to a Quicktime slideshow of their model, which can be copied and dissected (assuming one has the necessary tools to do so). :) (The slideshow ends with a very nice view of the entire wording area.)
Once I get settled into work in a little while, I'll continue my quest to see if I can unearth the font. The Star Trek Movie Forum has a thread comparing this Enterprise to others, and the font has come up in discussion but has not been identified.
We all know that either it's a font available from somewhere for enough money, an available font that has been 'adjusted' (say, "I" for "1"), or something completely proprietary that a contract artist designed that is not available for love nor money. I'm hoping it's not Door Number Three.
