iPod Touch - should I get it?

I'm finally buying a new laptop -- The low-end MacBook Pro. Right now, with my education "discount" ($100 off of a $1,200 machine), I can get a free iPod Touch--I pay $299, and then get a full rebate.

I have an iPod already - it's got video and 60GB of space. The video is the little screen, not the full length and width of the iPod like the Touch version--but the Touch is only 8GB. I don't play video games, so... tell me why it's worth having (besides "FREE APPLE GADGET!").

LOL! I did think about that, yeah. But I'm curious as to whether or not it's worth keeping around. I know virtually nothing about the new touch-screen stuff Apple's got going on. Never used an iPhone.

They are awesome.
I'm probably the most unimpressed-by-apple person on the face of the planet, but I love my iTouch. Only thing they ever did right (although I jailbroke it immediately).
The video alone is worth it (plus wireless!).

So, the wireless thing, is it like, if you're in a coffeeshop and they have wireless, it'll hook right in and not cost anything? Besides video, what do you use it for? Does the screen make you go all squinty-like? How much storage does yours have?

The wireless thing...yes. I use it to read email in hotel lobbies at cons. It'll leech wireless anywhere there's a hotspot, even from moving trains. I use mine for a lot of things: music of course, I put photos on it, vids in progress to show people (I have cables to output to a tv or just use the screen) it's my car stereo, there's a notes function...and it's an etch-a-sketch (complete with shaking action)!
Oh, mine's an 8gig 1st gen. I bought it the day they came out. Zoe Rayne sold me on the iphone, but I didn't need a phone so I waited for the Touch to hit the market.

Oh, you asked about the video screen -- definitely no squinty. It's really very clear and pretty comfortable to watch even subtitles movies on. Video uses the entire real estate of the device, so it's about twice the size of your video ipod and very clean and crisp.
