Governor Sanford was in Argentina, not hiking the Appalachian Trail.

IDEK, people. This entire story is just... mental--from the man to his wife to his staffers. And he thinks he's running for President in 2012? Good luck with that.

Wow. I hadn't seen this yet, but...good grief. He's an elected official, the chief executive of a state. One might think that, as such, he has a certain level of accountability to his citizens that would preclude his disappearing without notice. What if he were killed in a plane crash? What if he found himself arrested by local police in a case of mistaken identity?

He should have at least alerted his staff so that the Lt. Governor could be on alert should something unseemly have happened to him. (And if he DID alert his staff and they misled the public either on their own or under his instruction, how can his administration be trusted to be honest with their citizens at other times?)

There is speculation (and it is *only* speculation) that he's Yet Another Closeted Republican (Buenos Aires is known as a super-friendly destination for gays), and that he figured that by going out of the country, he'd be less likely to be caught.

His wife's, uh, *interesting* response to questions about his whereabouts may signal that she knows.

Again, people are just throwing out theories.

You know, I was wondering about that. I totally understand being overwhelmed by people and needing to get away, but it seemed really fishy to me, especially since neither the Lt. Gov. nor his wife knew where he was. Supposedly.

And yet, if he was just getting his gay on with men down in Buenos Aires, I'd actually be relieved... that he wasn't in the Far East pursuing children.

Srsly. I do understand the desire to "get out of Dodge" for a few days, but responsible adults make arrangements and leave emergency contact information. No story there.

What did he think would happen?

Now you know the press will be down there, and they will find out exactly what he was doing and tell everyone (whether we care or not). Most likely it will ruin his career. Couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.
