Sometimes I love Chris Matthews, and sometimes I loathe Chris Matthews. The thing is, on any given day, I don't know which one it will be, so I can't bring myself to tune in. I figure anything I want to see will turn up on one of the various political blogs I follow.

The birth certificate and the "Birther Bill"

It's a very short video clip, but if you don't want to watch it, here's a summary:

Tweety: Obama born in America--true or false?

Rep. John Campbell (R-CA): Constitution! Natural-born Citizen! Requirement!

Tweety (holds up Obama's birth certificate to the camera): Obama born in America--true or false?

Rep. John Campbell (R-CA): Birther Bill nothing to do with Obama! Can't see certificate from here!

Tweety (reads Obama's birth certificate aloud): Obama born in America--true or false?

Rep. John Campbell (R-CA): It doesn't matter what I think!

Tweety: YOU ARE FEEDING THE CRAZY PEOPLE A BREAKFAST OF DELICIOUS AND NUTRITIOUS CRAZYFLAKES HAVE YOU NO SENSE OF DECENCY SIR YOUR THOUGHTS: OBAMA BORN IN AMERICA Y/Y?

Rep. John Campbell (R-CA): Y.

Tweety: DIAF Okay.

You know what I don't get about that whole thing?

Yes, there are nuts putting doubt on Obama's eligibility to be president (really stupid ones, I think. It's not up to the Dems to prove he was born in the US - we have the proof. It's up to the doubters to prove otherwise - where are the records of Stanley Ann Dunham's trip to Kenya and back?

But here's the real kicker - *McCain* really was born outside US territory. Birth on a US installation doesn't count.

I know McCain was born in Panama, but isn't any American instillation automatically American soil?

Nope.

Which is why my oldest brother, born in a US Airforce base in Japan, was "officially" born in a post office in San Francisco.

Special Delivery, indeed....

(I had no idea that US military bases on foreign soil were not considered "United States" for birth purposes. Now my mind is trying to wrap itself around the US base at Guantanimo, which should violate the "Ignore Cuba Until It Goes Away" Act but which seems to be "United States" enough for purposes of incarceration.)

You know, you'd think if this was really an issue, it would have been brought up in the Senate back when they had to pass a freaking resolution to make sure everyone agreed McCain was allowed to run.

Good grief. I don't get this whole adoration/deification of the flag thing. There's patriotism, and then there are these loonies.

Between this idiocy and the old chestnut trotted out earlier this week -- OMG, the moon landing was faked!!1! -- the crazies are really out and proud these days. *headdesk*

I wonder what those "MOON LANDING A FRAUD" people make of the recent photos from the satellite orbiting the moon *showing the LEM and the footprints*.

Probably that some kid made it on his computer. Or, hey, maybe it was ILM!

And none of those idiots can ever explain how astronomers can still measure the distance between here and the moon, to within an inch, with the reflector array Armstrong and Aldrin left up there.

The entire exchange reminded me of the red-shirted crazy lady questioning McCain about Obama being an Arab last year. "He's going to turn the White House into a pyramid!"

Oh, right that last part was SNL.

So I'm only watching this thing from the sidelines and going "those crazy Americans", but didn't Obama actually produce his birth certificate? I mean, what else is he supposed to do?

Yes. He has produced his birth certificate. Chris Matthews had a copy *on his show* and *read it aloud to the guy*. The birthers don't care, just like the moon conspiracy people will always believe the moon landing was a hoax, no matter how much evidence is produced, and just like the 9/11 conspiracy theorists who say that no plane crashed into the Pentagon, and the WTC was "an inside job."

From: [identity profile] rike-tikki-tavi.livejournal.com
See, I didn't get that they are conspiracy nutcases. The only logical way to have him not be born in the U.S. would be to kick out Hawai retroactively.

See, I didn't get that they are conspiracy nutcases.

Oh, they are -- maybe you don't have the whole birth certificate, uh, "story." See, he was born in Kenya, and the birth certificate from Hawai'i is a fake. Or, possibly, he is Malcolm X's illegitimate son and was born in Canada when his white mother went into hiding so Malcolm X's Muslim followers wouldn't murder her.

"Proof" that the birth certificate is a fraud.

"Proof" that Obama was born in Kenya.

"Proof" that Obama's mother was in Seattle when Obama was "born" in Hawai'i, and therefore he is the illegitimate son of Malcolm X.

And on and on.

Sometimes I love Chris Matthews, and sometimes I loathe Chris Matthews.

So true. He's such a pompous ass. But just when you think he's way more trouble than he's worth he'll say something quite perceptive, and he's quite good at hammering idiots into the ground -- and not by name calling, he just dismembers every stupid point they try to make.

No point in trying to educate "birther" people. They're not interested in evidence, facts, or logic. I think they simply can't bear the thought of having a black man in the White House, and this fantasy makes them more comfortable with their own racism.

I loved him taking down that asshole who was going on about how Obama was an "appeaser" when Obama, during the campaign, had the unmitigated gall to suggest we *gasp* TALK to national leaders before bombing their countries. That was a thing of beauty.

From: [identity profile] darthhellokitty.livejournal.com
So, for the Birthers, the best possible result of Obama being proven not-born-here is Biden is president, right?

HOW MUCH BETTER IS THAT? (for them)

I know, I know. He's white.

Date: 2009-07-22 11:25 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tzikeh.livejournal.com
Well, their main contention is that he wasn't lawfully allowed to *run* for President, so it would all be a giant do-over, with another Democratic candidate.

I think you could put one of the wolves Sarah Palin *shot* up against McCain and people would vote for the dead wolf.

But the Supreme Court would step in and stop the giant do-over, like they did with the '00 recount. Right?
