I flew Air Tran once. Didn't have any of the problems you describe, but being charged $25 for the first 2 pieces of luggage and $50 for a 3rd? Fuck that noise.
WOW. When I was first looking for VVC plane tickets, I was trying AirTran first because they advertised that new wifi service, but they don't fly into O'Hare. I'm so glad that I had to go with another airline now. That sounds like a horrible experience!
Remember ValuJet? They had that crash in the Florida everglades back in '96 that killed 110 people, the cause of which was incompetence on the part of their contracted maintenance staff? They changed their name to AirTran.
I always felt the name change was pretty sneaky and underhanded, too, because they did it to distance themselves from the crash, which is something most other airlines can't do.
The day that crash happened, a friend of mine was flying in to visit me in Miami. I saw the news and FREAKED. Turned out, his was the last ValueJet to fly that day - right after the previous one.
When his plane landed, the news cameras were there interviewing every person who got off the plane, and none of them had any clue what had happened.
The good news for me is that AirTran doesn't fly out of my local airport, so it's never an issue. :-)
I habitually fly American, Continental or Southwest, depending on which one of them fits into my schedule best and offers the best price. They're none of them perfect, but I tend to prefer them over the alternatives, such as they are. *sigh*
Read about the Continental debacle with one of their commuter in Rochester Minn. 9 hours in a sardine can yesterday. http://www.startribune.com/local/east/52798827.html?elr=KArksLckD8EQDUoaEyqyP4O:-DW3ckUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUUF

 All airlines have problems. But I've flown all over the country with some regularity on Continental and never had a real problem. It's like when a plane crashes--everyone goes nuts, but that's because it's in the news. What *isn't* in the news is the thousands of planes that land safely every single day. So, we don't hear about the thousands of hassle-free flights, because they're not news.
Well, yeah, like I said, ain't none of 'em perfect; if I restrict myself to airlines that have never had angry customers, I'm going to be pretty much restricted to places that I can drive to. But I've flown Continental -- and American, and Southwest -- a lot, and gotten to where I've needed to go with (relatively) minimal hassles, which is more than I can say for United. And Delta. And US Air. *sigh*
